Really? You could install 7 without a product key. You would just get "windows is not genuine" instantly, but you would still be able to use the system.
They just changed that in Windows 8. I had to write down the activation keys for Consumer Preview and Release Preview. The reason Enterprise allows you to skip activation is because companies need a central activation server.

    Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 (64 bit), Linux Mint 17.1 MATE (64 bit)

MS fixed at least one thing

At least MS fixed (in W8 Enterprise RTM) whatever was preventing my sound driver from installing (in W8CP & W8RP).
It actually had some working Live Tiles too.

Now all I have to do is install some real programs:

    • Firefox
    • IrfanView
    • Foxit
    • Winamp

Once that's done I might be able to play around with it.

Metro (sorry, the GUI formerly known as Metro) is still awful.
I guess I'll have to install Classic Shell.

    The Apps aren't very useful.
The blinding white colour scheme is annoying.

Mysteriously, my VirtuaWin KvasdoPager toolbar had to be reinstalled in W7(!), after I created and ran the W8 VHD.

Wow, Hello Windows 2000 I never wanted to see the "color" grey on my computer UI ever again!

I think I've figure out why they /destroyed/ the visuals of the desktop though. By comparison, Metro looks beautiful now. Yet another carefully planned way of forcing you (through mind control this time) to use the metro screen. After working in the colorless wasteland of the desktop for a while, the sight of some color on the start screen will have you breathing a sign of relief!!!

Well I am forcing myself to use the Enterprise RTM...and I am slowly getting used to it. Its not to bad and I am coming around to the new style, it's definitely cleaner and crisper looking!

    LOL.

    The rtm is interesting.

There is a news app. of some kind on the start screen .

Bizarrely, it takes me to some kind of Guardian online paper.

I quite like that - have used it a few times. It is not necessarily better than some kind of similar gadget, or a shortcut to take me to Guardian online from the desktop - but it is ok.

When I get to the Desktop - it is bland and 2 dimensional - but not as hideous as I feared. I don't mind that too much, there will be various things from our friends at Deviantart to improve it.

What I do mind is the forcing of Metro ( or whatever they are going to call it).

That is where MS have gone wrong.

Instead of ripping out code and pushing constantly to the start screen - they should have made it somewhere people want to go.

There were always going to be compromises - putting a phone UI as well as the Main UI means they have to take some stuff out simply to make room.

If they do it carefully - I don't think that would be a major issue.

Making Media Centre a separate download is not in itself a bad idea - it make space - you don't bother with it if you don't want it - and MS can update it more easily. ( Not sure about charging extra for it - but that is different question.)

    The fix is very simple.

Put back the explorer/desktop functionality the customers want, and make the app. store and related services attractive, so users choose to go there.

The problem with media player being gone is that mpeg 4 (and other) video formats are also gone. The one hope of there being a universal, always ready video format which Windows 7 was making happen is now gone for good.

If something isn't installed by default, programs cannot make use of it at all.

If you have a program that needs to playback mpeg 4 video we are now back to each program having to license and install a codec/player leading to pure codec hell like XP. Windows 7 was a video utopia by comparison (Even if it didn't support the hacked mkv formats)

Media player is still there. It's just media center that needs to be downloaded separately.

RTM "N" has no media player. It's because of some regional restriction. If you download the leaked 8 pro, there is media player.

Ugly colors in Customization
Why does MS insist on using overly bright pastel looking colors across all their OS's? Starting with XP on up to Win8 they use pastel bright colors that in my opinion are not pleasing to the eyes. It's like they let the grade school girls design the color scheme. Why can't they find a line...
