If Windows 8 is a success and consumers give Microsoft the green light to keep going this direction, here are some things we can look forward to in Windows 9.

-No more separate Home/Pro/RT versions. Just one Windows 9 for everybody for simplicity
-All applications run full screen
-Complete removal of the desktop and Windows Explorer
-Removal of multitasking capability
-Removal of support for optical or removable media; Can no longer install software off CD/DVD
-All programs downloaded as apps from Microsoft store; no other option for installing software onto Windows 9
-Removal of DirectX and 3D graphics support
-Removal of support for sound greater than 2 speakers/headphones
-Removal of cmd
-All websites default to mobile websites, even on desktop PCs
-3 months free Microsoft Movies subscription, Microsoft's attempt to take on Netflix/Hulu
-On-screen keyboard required, even on a desktop or laptop. You can use the mouse to type, or you can download an illegal hack to enable a traditional keyboard

Is this what everybody wants to see? If not, Boycott Windows 8!

Hi there
Oh dear -- here we go again --- "....best Laid plans of Mice and Men....."

C'mon folks --PLEASE get real. Nobody can work 100% full screen in a Work environment -- it's JUST NOT GOING TO HAPPEN --especially if you have nice large 50 - 60 inch backlit Plasma TV's as your working screens.

Cheers
jimbo

That's just stupid of you fine sir :)

Be reasonable, Microsoft will never do this. They will kill them self and they know it.

Can't you people just understand that Microsoft wanted too make an OS which works on all platform, and because of that they had to make the Metro Start Screen instead of continuing with the startbutton which is very little touch friendly.
I bet they forced this uppon us so that people don't have to get used to different ways to navigate. As long at it has WIndows (8) it will be the same on EVERY device. Isn't that a nice thought?
The avarge user will love this, offcourse it maybe feel restricted for the "pros" and "entusiast", but all in all, the restrictions are quite small and the only problem you have to face is to get used to something new. There are no real problem except form what I will call a "userproblem".
In this case the "userproblem" is that the user is a stubborn little fella that can't accept that he have to get used to something new :)

When I see the people complain I just imagine my granpa refusing to "give in" to technology ;)

Heh it looks like people are not realising that you are making a statement (I.e. not reading your last line).

Actually I think you hit a lot of nails on the head and it's amazing the number of people that have actually been clamoring for a large number of those very "features"! Frightening actually :(

Yes, I agree. It is hard to imagine anything worse than that list.

There might be a much bigger shake up of the entire personal computing scene than many of you realise.

There are big opportunities being opened up here by what MS is doing.

I am not at all sure it is going to go where MS is planning.

I don't think MS know what a big risk they are taking. If they did - they would try to take their existing users with them - instead , they are doing the opposite.

Impossible to predict exactly where it will lead.

It is at times like this that big shifts in market share tend to happen , and new entrants seize the opportunity to enter the fray.

It might even turn out for the best with a much more open field.

I hope so.

This sounds absurd and almost falls into the definition of propaganda....

But I'm interested, as Windows 9 is now the next thing that will come out. I want to make predictions too!

-Further Start Screen customizations
-IE 11
-Possibly the removal of the Desktop IF a large chunk of developers have built or are building RT apps from their Desktop app counterparts, or maybe the Desktop in the Server 2015 build or for Enterprise
-Office 2015 in full WinRT code
-More emphasis on the metro design, maybe some transparency, FULL metro iconography
-Maybe some windowing of the apps
-Better app snap, like active resize to allow the user to snap apps together, and change the size of one to whatever and the corresponding app reduces down in size
-DirectX 12
-FASTER!

Well, if you put that list under the Xmas tree in a couple of years , and leave some nice cookies for Santa - you never know.

It might split like that - metro survives - with big changes, possibly even a name change - but only on RT.

3yrs is a long time. The landscape might all be very different by then

I wouldn't be surprised if some major corrections were needed and the next windows is a lot sooner than 3yrs.

Were you talking about that post up above, or all of yours on how great Windows 8 is? :D

I'd have given ANYTHING to have been a fly on the wall of the most likely heated potentially violent meetings that were held in Redmond regarding this situation, I mentioned in another thread that during a major meeting regarding Windows 8 last October with Ballmer, many of the top execs, developers, and engineers present that at one point a large number of folks actually got up and LEFT that meeting observers said that the meeting was very heated, and that those leaving the meeting unscheduled appeared very unhappy and disgusted.

It's not all roses for Mr Ballmer.

I think he will be handing over and bowing out gradually.

In spite of having amassed a 9-10bn fortune, he doesn't want to be remembered as the guy who presided over the MS share drop from $60 to $30.

He wants to go with a big success under his belt.

Maybe he will get that with Windows 9 - or whatever the next one is called.

BEEDUBAYA,

if so, it is better to stay on Win8 and ban Win9. There is nothing wrong with Win8.

Is it really possible that Microsoft completely remove desktop in Windows 9? Desktop is like a backbone for Windows operating systems. Most tasks can be accomplished with desktop. How can you accomplish the same tasks with metro which is unorganized and scattered. Desktop is systematic.

icet, Want to really picture that in your mind? Get a VM, and install Apple Lisa's O/S on it. Was just looking back in the past, and seems that Windows is STARTING to look like a throw back of an older Mac O/S. The specially O/S placed on the original Apple Lisa wasn't the standard Mac O/S, it used drop down flags...Hmmmmmmmmm Metro tiles, Apple Flags? Looks like it might be.....

If windows 8 will be successful, then it's all because the desktop mode still exists. If they remove desktop mode for windows 9, then it will be 10000x worse than microsoft bob and it would be the end of windows OS for good.

If Microsoft wishes to take Windows in this direction then it would not mean the end of Windows immediately but ultimately it would. It would also mean the end of Windows dominant position as soon as they release an OS along these lines. Some other company would take advantage of the vacuum.
