What if the RTM re- introduces choice.

Choose your default interface - choose start menu or start screnn, flip back and forth as you wish.

Any other niggles would be forgotten - things that have been removed, etc.

There would be a huge roar of almost unanimous approval.

Yes, Ms are listening - they have produced the greatest o/s ever ...!

That would be the best launch MS could ever hope for.

A Brilliant Move.

It takes courage and imagination.

We shall soon see if Mr Sinofsky has made that brilliant move.

Hi there

".............Well if Pigs could fly ...."!!!

(while we are at it also forget that whole cackhanded copy from Apple of an App store -- it's never going to work in Europe -- anti monopoly laws will prevent Ms from controlling software distribution in the first place (and a lot of other jurisdictions have just as strict anti-monopoly laws too).

Cheers

Microsoft is a damn good company. No company can match Microsoft in terms of its taking care of its customers. And no operating system can match Windows! I love Microsoft and Windows as well as Microsoft's policies and its foresightedness!

Overall I really like Windows 8. I use it at home and work now. If they did offer choice, all I would ask for is the choice of what I boot into desktop or Start screen. At work I would like it to go to the desktop and home the Metro screen. Other than that I have no issues with it.

That really is the crux of the largest complaint which could easily have been solved by making "home" Metro centric and "Professional" desktop centric...

FSeal, I understand that's what makes some people mad. I see it as barely an issue. It takes half a sec to hit desktop then I'm good for the day. But given the choice yeah change it. Guess we will see right?

Unfortunately there are several things that get you back to the metro screen weather you want to see it or not, but yeah, once the RTM hits we'll find out how much it can be "Excorsized" :)

I haven't tried to do a lot of it with the CP because there was the unknown of how MS might try to block things like StartX etc. Starting tomorrow I'll get into hacking at it in ernest. As well as trying to get it fully integrated with my network, hooked up to multiple printers, playing nice with my WHS (Ugh, crosses fingers) etc... That's when the S will really hit the F, when I actually attempt to use it "for real".

That would indeed be a shrewd move... but methinks there is way too much intransigence at ms central, plus their arrogance leads them to believe their own bs.

Haha thanks. :thumb: Still don't think it's something to be "mad" about. Maybe it's just me, and that's ok.

During a major meeting last fall (october 2011??) between the software engineers, Stevie Ballmer and some of the other brASS tack executive management there was a confirmed walk out of a number of the top development engineers and this meeting was about the direction of Windows 8 as I recall. My guess is that those that walked out were NOT in favor of forcing the metro UI on the customers.

Anyone who at that meeting care to offer their anon point of view? LOL

WE WOULD LOVE TO HEAR IT.:geek:

Well all I can say is, if I was there as a senior architect, I would have been fighting for Metro as a windowed app on the desktop (or at worst the primary interface on HOME only). And I would have fought tooth and nail for that until I was forced out for not towing the line...

Metro as a windowed app on the desktop

Wouldn't you have tested it first - focus groups for example?

I would be ok with that personally, and my guess is it would have been well received - but you always need to check .

I don't think MS bother with any of that finding out about the customers stuff.

Might that have a teensy weensy bit to do with why win8 is like it is now?

Well I don;t work for MS so it's really hard to say how they make their decisions. I mean the decision to remove the start menu? That was pure politics with thin and baseless "metrics" used to justify it that's clear :(

There is a huge "political" push to further commercialise windows to provide ongoing revenue streams that obviously over-road a LOT of decisions that may have made Metro a lot more appealing on the desktop.

That kind of thing I would have fought against as a design engineer but ultimately lost due to corporate minded overrides...

So while there MAY have been some amount of user testing of UI design, then overriding descisions /clearly/ have been to push metro completely in our faces to generate continuous at and subscription revenue in the future. After that the user testing was probably for "How do you like this color?" and such. As I'm sure the screaming about the missing start menu just got you kicked out of the program :D

I've been saying this all along, giving Users the choice of modes for this Op system would be simply brilliant.

But I can't help but to think they have a plan for this in the future, the problem is that everyone wants it NOW!

Hi there
Giving Customers a Choice -- now that's a revolutionary thought -- next we'd be getting automated phone systems situated IN OUR OWN COUNTRIES that offer you the CHOICE YOU WANT IN YOUR OWN LANGUAGE and unless you could get a Human to reply within 10 secs you could put the phone down and wait for a call back.

I think the Cloud is "Cloud Cuckoo Land" but expecting improved Customer choice these days -- well it's probably as likely as the Mafia donating huge amounts of money to The Salvation Army.

Cheers
