Solved loading into desktop OR start screen takes forever

Hi,

Please help me help my cousin with his HP Notebook. Two days ago, he clicked on a downloaded MS Presentation file to open it, but instead of opening, something was running as if MS Office is reinstalled, so he just cancelled it but it hangs for hours so he decided to force it shut-down. When he pressed again the power button, he got to the user sign in screen but after he signed in, nothing appears but a black screen with only the mouse cursor visible when moved. He told me that he dad left it to see if it will load into the start screen or the desktop after several hours but to no avail.

I have tried running "startup repair" but it can't repair it and gives this file path: D:\Windows\System32\Logfiles\SrtTrail.txt

Please, I humbly ask for any advice/tips to solve this issue from anyone.

Best and God bless,

z

Haven't done this in a long time but since nobody else posted I'll see what I can remember. First thing You need to do is enable F8 Boot into Safe Mode. There are plenty of Google Search results and YouTube Vids on doing that. Here's one search result: How to enable the F8 key to start Safe Mode in Windows 8

Once You're able to Boot into the legacy menu go into Safe Boot or Safe Boot with networking and open a elevated Admin CMD Prompt. Run sfc /scannow and wait for the results. If it finds errors it can't fix, reboot and run it again. It might take three runs with reboots. If You still can't get the OS working You'll need to Safe Boot with networking and open Admin CMD again and run the following CMDs.

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

If this solves the problem You can remove the F8 Boot to speed Boot time up, if it doesn't, You'll need to make a install USB or ISO of the OS and we can work from there.

Hi Bat 1,

Booting into "safe mode" was the second thing I tried after first trying to run "startup repair" which of course I get there by holding down the "shift key" while clicking restart. First, startup repair was not able to repair any issue, and safe mode experience the same problem as normal logging in. I've also activated the hidden Administrator account using the cmd via the same way I get to both 'running startup repair' and 'booting into safe mode' but it turns out I couldn't get to the Administrator account, which led me to assume that the current user account is either the Administrator account or something is blocking the Administrator account or other.

Anyways, I've also tried to mount the notebook's hdd using Live Kali Linux in an attempt to backup into my external hdd, my cousin's official files/folders but was not able to do it due to the following error message:

Unable to mount 320 GB Filesystem
Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 14: Windows is hibernated, refused to mount.
Failed to mount '/dev/sda2': Operation not permitted
The NTFS partition is hibernated. Please resume and shutdown Windows properly, or
mount the volume read-only with the 'ro' mount option, or mount the volume read-write with
the 'remove_hiberfile' mount option. For example type on the command line:

mount -t ntfs-3g -o remove_hiberfile /dev/sda2 /media/28C00282C002570A

I've also executed the example above (after first shutting down the PC instead of logging in) but it wasn't successful. I've also checked the hdd's partition with 'Disk Utility' (still on Kali Linux) and its SMART Status is "Disk has a few bad sectors".

Hence I will try your trick above using cmd but just not in safe mode since I can't get that to load. I will post back result. Oh, and I will also search Kali Linux support/forum for more tips on how to safely remove_hiberfile or hibernation stage of the hdd. If I can back-up my cousin's official files/folders onto my external hdd, then I will just clean install Win8.1... resetting the system is worrisome as the system reserved partition also has errors as far as the Disk Utility is concerned.

Thanks again and God bless,

Z

Hi again Bat 1,

I've run "sfc /scannow" 3 times and I always get a message about it can't scan because a repair schedule is pending. Of course the startup repair I ran was exited properly after it failed to repair anything so I guess this message is related to what I got when I tried mounting the disk in Kali Linux, which says, the disk is in hibernation mode and firstly need to be shut down properly.

Anyways, I thought I should try Live Lazesoft Recovery Suite, and guess what, all files/folders are now being copied into my external hdd. Now once I finished this, it will be a clean install of Win8.1 when done, but maybe I will first try and reset its system.

Thanks again for the help anyways and best of luck to you in your endeavors.

Best and God bless,

Z

Glad to read You were able to recover the files. After the reset or fresh install You might want to test the HDD with every tool You can throw at it. I once had a HDD that failed to Clone and I tested the drive "Good" with everything I could think of ? Finally a Mate recommended I Surface Check with MiniTool Partition Wizard since He knew I use it but hadn't mentioned that I'd tried. Found a bad section and a 1TB internal drive got put in a spare external enclosure with 780GB capacity :) Still working great 3 Years later. I loan it out so if it never returns one Day it won't be a big loss. LOL

Are you saying that you shrunk your 1TB internal drive after the surface check with MiniTool Partition Wizard found a bad sector, and that you now put it in an enclosure to be an external hdd with 780GB capacity? Why? Does the bad sector means that you can not use it as an internal drive for OSs?

Anyways, I ran 'Check Partitions Wizard' of Lazesoft (still running) and found 3 categories of errors (bad sectors) so far after running for about 3.5 hours:
  1. attribute list entry with code 48 in file (...) is corrupt
  2. attribute list entry with code 128 in file (...) is corrupt
  3. file record segment (...) is unreadable

(...) above stands for reported sectors. So far, there's 6 under category #1, 2 under category #2, and 243 under category #3 and still counting. With this info, will it be possible to do a clean install of Win8.1 or not? What if I format the drive?

Hoping to hear from you soon. Best and God bless,

Z

A low-level format will mark bad sectors as unusable, and You could likely install Windows again, But the Disc sounds like it's Dying and Probably needs to be replaced. When I did the format on that drive it would stop at that one spot and couldn't continue, prolly too many bad sectors in one spot, so I just partitioned the rest of the drive space to use for Storage Only. Not familiar with Lazesoft as I always used MiniTool.

Thanks much Bat 1. I've managed to clean install Win8.1 and already copied back my cousin's files/folder into his laptop. I will take a look at the MiniTool you mentioned and see probably get a copy of it.
