How to rebuild icon and thumbnail cache? Older methods/bat files do not work any more.

The methods below to rebuild the icon cache and thumbnail cache still work in Windows.

If they do not work for you, then you may have a different issue. Please provide more details along with some screenshots to see what the issue could be.

The option 1 did not work for me.

What worked:

del C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer\*cache*.*

after killing explorer.

Notice that it also kills thumbnailcache files.

That's basically what the .bat files do in those tutorials except separately for icon vs thumbnail cache.

Probably, several reasons.

1. I used some old bat file. It apparently was from the same source but did not do anything in AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer. Only deleted %localappdata%\IconCache.db. Previously this file worked!

2. I did not know it is different things, deleting icon cache and thumbnail cache. I thought deleting icon cache should delete thumbnails as well.

3. Even when I deleted what needed, the thumbs still were old after relogin. Somehow they refreshed only later.
