Multitude of Problems With Windows 8.1

Hold onto your butts, this is going to be a long one.

I've had my PC for over a year now, almost two, after building it. I run Windows 8.1 on it, almost since it's been running. However, months after building it, it began running into some issues on startup -- the dreaded automatic repair loop, obscenely long restart times for updates, etc. Eventually, my PC failed to boot at all and just got stuck on the blue Automatic Repair screen. And, instead of fixing it immediately, I just left it alone. Stopped using the computer.

These past few weeks I decided to revisit it because I had put a considerable amount of money into the project and it seemed wasteful to let it sit there broken. I decided to make a different USB Bootable Drive to reinstall Windows 8.1, this time on a Windows laptop borrowed from a friend. I did this because the first bootable drive I made was on a Mac laptop, and I figured that may have caused some problems (my computer tower does not have a CD drive, so this is my only option to reinstall the operating system). Thus, I re-downloaded the Windows 8.1 ISO from Microsoft, made a bootable drive using Rufus, stuck it into my PC and reinstalled completely.

Things got a little better, but... Not really. Once I reinstalled, I tried re-downloading some drivers and such but my PC seemed to be having trouble installing them. I downloaded the genie for my wifi adapter and, for some reason, the installer didn't create a shortcut or application for it anywhere. I learned that certain drivers cannot be installed completely if Windows is not completely up to date. So, I went to Windows Update to check, and I ran into problems there. Windows Update repeatedly got stuck checking for updates and never came to a conclusion. So, now I have a brand spankin' new install of Windows, can't download and install drivers correctly, and still cannot restart the PC correctly without taking obscenely long (upwards of an hour or more).

Just a lot of strange things happening with downloading applications and drivers. Why?

What is going on here? I feel like all of these issues are coming from a single source, I've missed something during installation, something. I have even considered that maybe this is a hardware incompatibility problem (this may not be the case as I am no computer wiz), so I have posted my specs down below. Anything would be helpful. Will confirm answer when a solution arises.

Thank you for reading. If anything is unclear or if this was posted inconsiderately, let me know. I'll be sure to provide any extra information.

Welcome to the forum. The wifi may not have a program it may just install drivers and you use windows to connect. Is it a 32 or 64 bit o/s?
there will be a lot of updates if its an old iso

Thank you for your quick reply.

Architecture is 64 bit. I'd i
magine there would be a lot of updates, but what can I do to obtain them? As I mentioned, Windows Update was going for quite some time with no result.

UPDATE: On the PC now. Went into Windows Update and initially, it said No Updates Available, and that I'm set to automatically receive updates from Windows. After hitting "Check for Updates" again, it's started to check.

And, for some strange reason, my PC tells me every few seconds that I've removed something from the audio jack... Interesting.

I have seen that link and tried the download, but when I tried to use the program, it got stuck as well and had to be force quit in Task Manager. I later learned that this is because it cannot function at the same time as Windows Update, but at this point, I can't get Windows Update to stop checking. Doesn't show up as a process in Task Manager.

So now it's the OPs turn to hold on :)

First off the Best option for installing from a Genuine M$ ISO would be to simply format the USB drive in Fat32 and after mounting just copy and paste. Rufus isn't needed

For the insanely long boot times I'd be looking at the possibility of a Dying HDD or possibly bad RAM. You could run Memtest86 on booting from a USB to test RAM and a Linux Distros to check the HDD health. One Question is the drive MBR or GPT partitioned ?

On my Son's A8-6600K MSI A75-E35 Rig a fresh install of Win 8.* or Win 10 won't have Ethernet access. I use a USB Wi-Fi dongle and install the drivers only. After I have internet I go into Device Manager then scan Network adapters for hardware changes and then I can connect by Ethernet. Instead of scanning for all driver updates start with Computer then goto Display adapters. After that scan for all and finally install the USB3 adapters Manually last.

For the Windows updating "Problem" You can read the solution posted in this thread: https://www.eightforums.com/windows...te-broken-after-fresh-install.html#post546629

After everything is installed and updated I recommend running a Admin CMD of sfc /scannow. If I skipped over anything just post back and I'll try to help with the little I know

When I first started out with Windows 8.1 I also had this slow boot issue which turned out to be my HDD which was dying (same observation as of Bat 1). For my install I made one using Rufus from the ISO that I downloaded from Microsoft via our office (which provided my license). Only thing is from time to time I get this slow boot and it turns out to be always the HDD though I have replaced all old HDD's with new ones from Western Digital (had bad experiences with Seagate although I admire their RMA support.)
