Newbie, here...

Ok, I got a new 8.1 laptop from Dell a few weeks ago and I notice some of the icons on the taskbar look jagged and crude. The same goes with some of the ones on desktop.

Is this some kind a dpi resolution thing? Is the resolution on my screen too sharp? And is there anyway I can fix or adjust these settings?

Thanks.

Hello. By default, your "new" laptop icons should not appear jagged.
Something has been altered.
Are there any flags in your device manager?
You could make sure the Radeon driver is up to date.
The display settings can be adjusted in the control panel.

Some icons reside in a system file called c:\windows\system32\imageres.dll

You could experiment with changing an icon.

If you have a mouse wheel,
you can change the desktop icon size by holding the control key
and rolling the wheel. Make sure the focus is on the desktop
as the active window. Left click an empty space.

Hello nt62 and thanks. I will look that up here in the next couple of days when I'm back at my machine..

It doesn't seem to be the system icons that came with the machine that appear jagged, but rather icons from 3rd party programs that I later added after I bought the machine. They look sharp enough on my earlier Windows 7 Ultimate laptop but look positively dreadful here.

I know graphics have gotten pretty sharp and HD in the last couple of years so maybe some program developers haven't caught up yet. I don't know.

Try running your Cleartype Wizard too, it's in the same area as nt62's first image. Sometimes that fixes it up.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
>Is this some kind a dpi resolution thing?
It could be imho. You could right click on the desktop, choose screen resolution from the menu, and change the resolution to see if that helps.

Updated the video driver. Everything went fine.

Then I tried to change the settings from 125% to 100% and this occurred.

It looks like it's missing the shortcut arrows. I uninstalled the old Vista shortcut arrows utility I had on there but it didn't seem to do anything. It does look like the shortcut arrows are missing though.

Any way to repair?

Thanks

~

PS: That Spyware Blaster icon was one of the jagged ones I was talking about when I started this thread.
