Solved 8.1 File Explorer Not Behaving...

Hi,

Over the last couple of days my laptop has been a little 'slow' so to speak.

Programs on it seem fine - e.g. Chrome, IE, Office programs etc.

However, it's the windows side that's letting me down.

Here's what I'm experiencing:
  • When opening File Explorer, it takes a while to load everything within it, and the bar loading across the top seems to just keep going and going.
  • I'm able to get into docs etc., but down the left panel there are no options under 'Libraries' and 'Favourites'.
  • When opening 'This PC', it opens but nothing at all loads here.
  • When going into control panel, nothing loads. (I can get to it though by going to 'System' from right-clicking start and navigating back to control panel where everything loads.
  • Icons not always showing for files within file explorer - sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. i.e. i have a lot of Excel files - they open fine, but just have white icons half the time within folders.

So everything is usable, but it's not right and I don't know where to be looking from here...

Any help is greatly appreciated folks.

PS... I doubt that this is related, but as it started on the same day it's worth mentioning... I use Outlook daily for work and since last Thursday (when the above symptoms started to happen) Outlook has been 'misbehaving'. As in, slow to visually send/receive emails (although i know they have been sent/received as they show on my phone instantly) and a couple of calendar reminders from that day keep popping up every time I open Outlook, even though they have been dismissed and deleted. Also search no longer works.

I would start by opening an elevated command prompt and running
sfc /SCANNOW

Also look in services(you can open it directly using Winkey r and typing "services.msc")
and see if Windows Search service is running. You may also need to reindex the folders where you need rapid searches.

Please post back the results of the sfc /SCANNOW

Did you try reindexing the slow folders? Sometimes it is not handled automatically. The index can have old data.

Thanks for your help. I was having problems even getting to indexing - as in couldn't search for it and nothing was appearing in control panel.

All is sorted now. Even though my laptop is restarted daily (!?), forcing to stop 'Windows Search' service and restarting brought everything back to life almost instantly. The service did kick up an error when stopping which i failed to capture, but tried a few times since and everything is fine.
