Mouse goes off right hand side of screen

I have Windows 8.1 installed on a new PC. I am finding that when the mouse pointer goes off the right hand side of the screen, I have to move the mouse back quite a long way before the pointer reappears on screen. It's like it thinks the screen is bigger than it is, but this can't be it, because otherwise surely it would display with parts of windows cut off at the right hand side when I do Full, wouldn't it? This is not the way the mouse behaves when I go off the other edges of the screen. In those cases the pointer disappears (at least, it does on the bottom edge), but I only have to move the mouse back fractionally for the pointer to reappear. This is how it has always worked in the past. But why this strange behaviour on the right hand edge of the screen? How do I fix it?

    Thanks - Rowan

    Hi,
Am sorry but you confused me a bit, could you send a screenshot to make it more clear?

I don't think a screenshot will do much good, because it will show either nothing (i.e. the normal contents of the screen with no mouse pointer), or the screen with a mouse pointer. The problem is that if I move the mouse so the pointer is on the right hand edge of the screen, and then move the mouse a further two inches to the right, I would expect that when I move the mouse 0.1 inches to the left, the mouse pointer reappears, and moves 0.1 inches to the left of the right hand screen edge. It does not. I have to move the mouse two inches back left (I haven't measured this) before the mouse pointer reappears.

    Does that explain my problem?

    Thanks - Rowan

Are you using a USB mouse? Maybe try taking it off and using the trackpad if you are on a laptop, if not maybe try another mouse cause this seems like a mouse driver issue.

Thanks for your reply. I was using a USB mouse. This is on a desktop PC. I have now connected a different keyboard with a built in track pad (also USB), and the problem is the same. I can move the mouse pointer a long way off the right hand side of the screen (using the track pad), and it then takes a lot of mouse movement to bring the mouse pointer back onto the screen Does each USB mouse have a different driver? I would have thought they were all the same, but that's is just a guess, no real knowledge. In any case, this does not seem to be the problem.

Any other ideas on what I can do to fix this annoying feature?

    Thanks - Rowan

Is your system set to more than one display/monitor?
Right click on the desk top and select display settings.

Thank you very much. This was the problem. I had two cables (one HDMI, one DVI) connecting to my monitor so it thought I had two monitors attached, even though there was in fact only one. On removing one of the cables it stopped this behaviour. Thank you very much for helping me solve this stupid problem.

    Thanks - Rowan
