Yes they are cheaper and predominately made of plastic, I have both a phone and a tablet,
they do precisely what they were purchased to do extremely well and I do recommend them to others
as the cost of both was <£300. they live in leather wallets and have not failed once in 2 years.
therefore you can add me to those in favour.
I am a W8 fan and have indicated that I will be upgrading and will in all probability buy a MS tablet.
But I will walk around town with a 4.8/5in phone in my pocket (1280x720 is better than a couple of laptops I have)
not a 10in tablet in a carry case.
Work related activities will obviously have different solutions.
To me, that's too huge of a "phone." If going on the road, I'd love me a phone, which its focus is more on easy to consume content and putting human communications as a first class citizen instead of apps. I can use Office on my Windows Phone, but it gets tedious. It's best for the scenario where I have time to kill, and don't have a PC to use. It's also good to use to update an Excel spreadsheet and have the changes sync to a PC. I'd also use a tablet PC, preferably a 10 inch (at least) screen size simply because I want to see more, and do more. I use my devices on how I believe they should be used. A smartphone can be used for some instances where a PC isn't available, but should be used for communication more than anything. A PC should be used for work, play, and whatever your body feels like doing with it.

Gee, some people are saying that Windows 8 is a crazy Frankenstein hybrid of sorts, but look at smartphones, especially android. They're trying to be Desktop-lite UIs smashed with a phone. That's how a zombie apocalypse happens.....

Readers Declare They Want Hybrid Windows Tablets, But at What Cost?

Could you extrapolate on what you mean by the numbers?
In terms of actual, hands on ownership, as opposed to opinion pieces. The number one selling device is the ipad. The next ten are all android.

True BESB, some do need a portable, some do need a tablet, but don't you see:

I work on a computer all day, I really do not want a tablet to use it outside the office for the rest of my day, which is 24 hours.

Sure, when I go to France, I have a portable with me, but just to reply to mails, nothing else.

What I meant was: it is nice all the new smartphones, tablets, whatever, but too much is too much.

    Certainly for me.

I think Jimbo did give it a better explanation for it.

I finally came to a conclusion with the belief that the hybrid tablets will be the next craze and voted at the $800 plus level. The $500-$600 levels are what people are buying now, but when they go to buy initially or a replacement, I believe they will pump out a little more mula to go first class for more function. I think these hybrids will cut into the lappy and notebook markets in a big way.

So, I think the Surface and similar machines will be a big hit. They will push to nearly the $1,000 mark.

Ok. Has one realized that android has been the ONLY alternative to the ipad? To me, the reasons for a Windows 8 tablet cancel out android in the tablet space altogether. For the enterprise wanting touch devices, android is a meek option with a meek outlook...

See, I think the market will stray more for Windows 8 Pro devices. Right now, RT tablets don't offer a whole ton and seem to be geared towards the average, casual user and student. Until developing companies like Autodesk and Adobe and the such develop their programs for WinRT, that's where the market will be at.

Now, as school will be starting soon in the fall, I'm now getting a few requests and questions as to what is the best laptop to get, LAPTOP. A mobile PC with either an Intel or AMD processing core with either Intel, NVIDIA, or AMD graphics cores. As many laptops are in the 6-700 dollar range for a decent option, that price point will definitely strike with people for a touch based tablet PC with Intel or AMD or NVIDIA processing technologies. I've even suggested to a few people to wait for Windows RT tablets since that will be less expensive and will suit their needs better. I've also suggested Windows 8 Pro tablets. So far, half have decided on a variant of Windows 8 tablet PCs.

I just don't see a huge demand for low cost tablets. Seriously, if you go so low, a smartphone would be a better choice than anything quite honest (Windows Phone 8 of course). And for some, it is. But for others, it isn't.

Valid point. My magic eight ball predicts win8 on tablets will not grab as much market share as ms hopes. Mind you, this is an opinion, and I reserve the right to be wrong. But, if they manage to even grab as much as 10% market share, I'll be gobsmacked.

On the other hand, suppose they do give android a run for their money, what do you suppose Google's answer will be...???

Perhaps a free, Android operating system for the PC.....

Apparently the Nexus 7 is selling really well. The 16GB model has been sold out.

If I was in the market for a Tablet it would be the one I would look at. Especially if they add a micro-SD slot.

I currently own a tablet of sorts in a Kindle. Makes no difference that it does not run Windows. I can still copy Data to and from it. I don't need it to have the same interface as my Desktop. Being different causes no confusion at all. My Nokia Phone uses a different operating system again. Still no problems operating it or connecting to my Windows PC.

For me to buy a Windows Tablet at a lot more expense, it would have to be because of a feature that I needed and could not get anywhere else. At the moment all I can see is Office and if you pay even more money for the Pro Tablet it will run Desktop Applications as well.

I can't ever see me needing office on a Tablet. If I need to take notes, I wouldn't need a full Word Processor to do that. When I need to work on a spreadsheet, I would be using a mouse, keyboard and the 27 inch display on my desktop. As for Desktop Applications. I can't think of any I have got that would really work with Touch.

I feel that windows 8 is going to give a shoe-in to this kind of fragmentation, we already have Chrome OS and the Firefox OS nipping on it's heels for the mail and web only computer users. I don't like seeing chinks in the armor like this. I LIVED through the insane fragmentation of the early personal computer days and have zero interest in going back there.

It helps a lot that windows8 will include a Russian mnemonic keyboard. Unfortunately a letter is missing entirely, namely the letter щ. Any plans to correct this?
