LOL and a half! It's just not the younger that suffer from this new phenomena. Losing my phone or loosing one of my construction tools is a more worse feeling to me than losing a woman! (I'm not putting down women, for my mother is one)

Also, I haven't voted yet for the jury is still out. I've been doing some reading which includes this thread. A lot of good comments. When is the deadline to vote if any?

FYI: I'm in need of a mobile system. Have an Droid2, but doesn't fulfill total needs. I'm eye-balling the Surface 8 Pro which will probably retail at about a $grand. We'll see.

    Hi Jimbo
I would hazard a guess that my usage is very similar to yours
I have never used facebook, tweeted or blogged
Full bloodied PC capability is essential as is excel, I only mentioned it in context of what could be presently achieved on my tablet. But I also have much more time on my hands and use a tablet to read books in bed, play vids, music and read books while traveling.

Staying within the context of this thread about tablets I put a 5in smart-phone in first place.
Choosing among devices available today on a worldwide market place.

The winner is the 4.8" Samsung Galaxy S3. android 4,quad core; stick in a 64gb micro sd card and you have 128gb of storage.
180 up front 21 a month variable choice on phone/text/data usage.
The s3 and the nexus are causing Apple to spend more on patent lawyers than research .

Two Thirds of New Mobile Buyers Now Opting For Smartphones | Nielsen Wire

Sorry to have to post this, but perhaps you need to see this, from the good folks at Nielsen. At his point, windows devices don't even merit a mention. I personally don't expect that to change much. Win8, even for the mobile touch market simply isn't compelling enough to make anyone switch.

As for actual tablets, really nothing for windows, in terms of percentage. Statistically zero.

I have to agree with Rickkins on this one Android based will eventually be outright winner in the smartphone/tablet wars
MS missed the boat by charging too much for the the licence for CE5/6 that powered the small touch devices.
They never became mainstream devices, and support ended with CE6.
I have a number scattered around somewhere a couple of original ipaqs from HP and 2 satnavs
    I decided to check on ebay for the going rate and found 7" touch satnav/video player/music/ebook at 50;
needless to say I don't expect they bought MS licences.
This is not saying that professionals will not buy the new MS surface in the same way they are buying ultrabooks
but in the market number terms I would put it around 1%.
In the terms of the poll at the start of the thread I now want to tick every box, I have no idea.

The smartphone market can't be used to compare to the tablet market. You could, but Windows 8 won't fit too well since it's not an OS based off the phone's OS. android is popular to an extent, as in it's used a lot but it's really because of hardware features and real cheap phones that are considered "smartphones." Yes, Windows Phone doesn't show up as that hasn't been getting a lot of clout. But, Windows Phone isn't like Windows, where Windows has a lot of clout and dominance in its market. When people buy a new PC, they go for a Windows PC over a mac because of hardware features and cost effectiveness and the fact it's Windows. When people see a Windows tablet PC, they will be more intrigued by it since it's something SO new and different and allows (if it's Pro not RT) for the capability of a PC with touch.

I see there's possible a spinoff for Windows Phone 8 success-wise. Once someone has a Windows 8 tablet, and discover the Windows Phone 8 and being able to have some of the same apps and games on it as it is on the tablet, to many people that would be just awesome.

On a side note, I want to say something about android in general. I've NEVER heard anyone personally praise their android phone, maybe two people though. Those two people like it because of widgets. Literally, EVERYONE I know that has an android phone, from 2.3.4.5.3.5.3.4.534.432.54.3 to 3.1.4.432.35.34.63.4 complain about lagginess, crappy hardware, apps that screw up, and on. Heck, I've even seen a brand new Droid chucked at a trash can out of user frustration! No kidding! But when you contrast that to Windows Phone 7 users, all the ones I know have NO issue with it. Literally all the consumer reviews of it say that the UI is sleek and modern, the phones themselves are pretty good quality, where the Nokia Lumia 900 is praised in part of the superb build quality of it. I don't know, you COULD compare the smartphone market to the tablet market, but if one did, the Windows tablet would win over android because of the user experience from hardware to software.

Windows Mobile 6 is actually dead. It got later morphed into Windows Phone 7 and the worldwide usage is at a mere two percent. Yes, Microsoft jumped into the boat late, a day late and a dollar short. I don't think it's a tragedy as Windows Phone 8 is coming into the market soon. That's where the next chapter starts.

I don't believe the smartphone could trump over a tablet. First off, I think it's outrageous to have an almost 5 inch "phone" be used as a PC. Absurd.

I believe that the Windows RT tablet will be great for people with limited needs simply because of shear screen size, a 10.6 inch screen beats out a 4.8 one. And, the tablet allows for personal comfort with different input and because Windows 8 is designed to allow the user use the tablet PC in whatever way feels comfortable to them.

Coke Robot you have a very jaundiced view of android devices.
Yes they are cheaper and predominately made of plastic, I have both a phone and a tablet,
they do precisely what they were purchased to do extremely well and I do recommend them to others
as the cost of both was <300. they live in leather wallets and have not failed once in 2 years.
therefore you can add me to those in favour.
I am a W8 fan and have indicated that I will be upgrading and will in all probability buy a MS tablet.
But I will walk around town with a 4.8/5in phone in my pocket (1280x720 is better than a couple of laptops I have)
not a 10in tablet in a carry case.
Work related activities will obviously have different solutions.
