Greetings,

I currently have Windows 8 Release Preview, it is my main OS. I have many programs, files, settings, etc.

My question is when the final version of Windows 8 comes out will I be able to upgrade to that version from my current version (Windows 8 Release Preview). What I mean by upgrade is not doing a clean install and having everything put into the windows.old folder.

Thank You.

Microsoft confirms Windows 8 testers to get $40 upgrade price, too | ZDNet

Short version: upgrade license yes, upgrade-in-place (which preserves installed programs and settings) no.

However, the same thing was true in going from the Windows 7 RC (release candidate, similar to the Win8 RP) to the RTM version. There are hacks that made it possible for Windows 7.

For my own purposes, I'd prefer to bite the bullet and do a clean install.

I kept an image of the win 7 I used to upgrade to win 8. I'll do a "Final" upgrade to that, but depending on my experience, I'm also willing to do as bobkn suggests and do a fresh install.
