8.1 does not recognize additional cores in cpu upgrade

Upgraded my AMD X3 to an X6 but core count remains at 3. I tried clearing the count to 0 in msconfig (max is 3, 0 is supposed to reset) and uninstalling all 3 old cores from device mgr. All 6 on the cores now show in device mgr (after reboot) but not in other apps (coretemp, cpuid, prime95...) Also tried changing cores to 6 in easybcd - no luck. Bios shows 6 cores.

I did a fresh install of 8.1 on another partition and all 6 show and work ok so my existing win 8.1 is not recognizing the new cpu properly.

    Any ideas?

fixed. Had to delete each core in devmgr AND set core count to 0 in msconfig, then reboot

Back in 2008/9 I had the Intel Q6600 cpu and at that time games and OS barely could utilize more than 2 cores of a processor. How are things now?
