My windows 8.1 and mouse froze and when I tried to get the task manager by doing alt+del+ctrl, that didn't help. Nothing happened so l had to wait a few minutes before hitting the power button. After this happened, I used ccleaner, ran a scan on spybot & destoy, ran a scan on eset to be sure and installed all windows updates including the optional ones to be sure it doesn't happen again but we'll see. I looked at the event viewer but don't see from there why this happened. Is there a way to find out? This happened before about a couple months ago. Oh and I was watching something on Netflix last night when this happened if that helps.

Do you run a temp monitor to see how hot the CPU and GPU are? The processors issue a Halt instruction if the temperature approaches the burn out threshold. If the unit is overheating it can cause lockups. I had a GPU on my HP AMD quad core with a fan on it. Every time the CPU registered over 1% usage the fan would surge up loud. Finally the fan broke and the GPU died.

I replaced it with a non-fan GPU from NewEgg for about $20. Really asinine design on the stock unit. I should have replaced the GPU as soon as I got the thing home from the store. Or better yet, bought an Intel quad that didn't have the problem.

As a computer tech myself, you have my curiosity up.... What does a Quad CPU have to do with a GPU overheating? They are NOT one and the same! Although, in some laptops, they do share the same cooling heatsink and fan.
I think it's just the way you worded your post that makes it confusing. Eh?

Cheers Mate!

Just wanted to update. It does appear that it was a temperature issue. ;)

I had Core Temp, which showed the CPU core load. Not something that displayed the GPU Load. All I can tell you is whenever a core registered %1 or more load on this Phenom 9850, the GPU fan went crazy. Why it would happen I don't think it should have. That's the bug. That quad core drove me nuts. It sounded exactly like Hurricane Frances.
