Folder Pictures Customization On Shared Disc Broken?

Hello,

I had some great experience with the sevenforums.com, so I figured, I'd give this a shot.

When you have a folder and the view is set as "Large Icons", then you place an image, .jpg in that folder, the folder uses that .jpg as its thumbnail background, then you place some more files into that folder and the .jpg stops appearing as the folder's thumbnail.

So, you go right-click on the folder - "Properties" - "Customize" and there you select the "Folder pictures" - "Choose File" and you select whatever .jpg you want as the thumbnail and the .jpg appear again as the folder's thumbnail.

This works fine, when the folder is located on the PC's HDD, however, it doesn't work with shared locations.

I shared an external HDD over the network, I can access it from my Windows 8 PC, but when I open it, no folder picture thumbnails, as when I opened it from the PC, to which the HDD is plugged into. I can't even set new picture thumbnails manually.

Does this make any sense?

Cheers,

I'm adding a screenshot here. Now, what I want to do is the following: "New folder" is what I want, "New folder (2)" is what I'm getting.

"New folder" has only 1x .jpg in it, while "New folder (2)" has 1x .jpg in it and 1x Microsoft Word document in it. I want to set a picture thumbnail to the "New folder (2)", so it looks just like "New folder", but regardless of what or how many files are in that folder.

Going "Properties" - "Customise" - "Folder icons" - "Change Icon" works only on PC's HDD. It doesn't work for folders, I'm accessing over the Internet network, which are located on an external USB HDD plugged into my notebook. I can access this external HDD, modify files and other content, but not the folder icons, which is really frustrating.

However, it reads some of the folder's settings, but not all of them.

Any ideas?

Cheers,

I'm adding a screenshot here. Now, what I want to do is the following: "New folder" is what I want, "New folder (2)" is what I'm getting.

Ok so you only want 1 preview icon showing up like "new folder" and when you have multiple documents in a folder, it shows more than the one Preview icon... like "New folder 2" correct? You only want it to show 1 blue windows icon no matter how many documents are in the folder... right?

Going "Properties" - "Customise" - "Folder icons" - "Change Icon" works only on PC's HDD. It doesn't work for folders,

Ok well show me what going to Customize and "folder icons" "change icon" looks like on the network folders.. or the "Usb connected folder.."

or what I mean is the options are greyed out? or it just doesn't show up? or you set it and then it doesn't show in file explorer?

I'm accessing over the Internet network, which are located on an external USB HDD plugged into my notebook. I can access this external HDD, modify files and other content, but not the folder icons, which is really frustrating.

I am sorry but I may be too confused still.. If you can modify files and other content, but not the folder icons.. - how does it not allow you to edit folder icons? by not letting you go to Properties or Customize?

I need to setup a situation with my computer the same as yours So I can try it also..

so I need 2 computers networked together.. then plug in a USB drive with folders on computer B. and try to change the Icon preview with Computer A.?? right??

However, it reads some of the folder's settings, but not all of them.

now you see why I'm still confused!? look at what you wrote here.. "it reads some of the folders settings"... well.. ok.. ?

If I setup a scenario with my computers, I should try to change icon like you want in "new folder" in the picture above in your post on the Computer B. across the network.. with a folder with multiple documents in it.. but you only want it to show the icon of the folder with 1 document only...

Apologies for the confusing description. You're correct in your assumptions. I got a notebook, external HDD is plugged directly into the notebook, I can customize the folder pictures on my notebook without problem.

Then, I got a desktop PC, I'm accessing the external HDD over the network, because I allowed sharing, when I open the external HDD on my desktop PC, some folders still have the same settings (same picture, e.g. "New folder") and others look like "New folder (2)".

Yes, it's always about folders with multiple files in it.

Yes, it allows me to go to the customization settings of the folder, but when I press "Apply", nothing happens.

I'll add some more screenshots. And many thanks for the help.

As promised, here are few more screenshots.

Above is, what I see, when I open those folders on my Windows 7 laptop. That HDD is USB connected to that laptop. No issues with editing the look of folders.

Above is seen, when I open the exactly same folder on my Windows 8.1 desktop PC through home network. Nothing was done, the same folder was opened on 8.1 like 1 minute later.

Here, I'm manually trying to edit the appearance of "New folder (2)" on my 8.1, after clicking on the "Apply" button, nothing happens at all.

Also, when I create folders locally, on 8.1 desktop machine, there's no problem with it either. So, I guess, there's some kind of error regarding the network or permissions or something like that.

Ok so in going to setup a network and share folders between 2 computers.. and put 2 folders -

Folder A - one file

folder B - 5 files..

I should be able to see multiple pictures on the folder B icon on both computers for the folder with multiple files..

Now, To be honest.. Now you mention one computer is windows 8 and the other windows 7

That alone could be the culprit..

How are the computers connected to each other? By cable or wireless..
