I just finished a quote for a high school, they want a wireless network for their 632 students that will use Ipad instead of text book and pen. They make the experience last year with 1 class and was extremely satisfy. Apple offer the Ipad at discount for the parents. It's not unique here in Quebec, few educational establishments are making the move to the tablet, eliminating all the books and papers.

The question is; Is Microsoft already too late ?, If we compare to the market of the graphic artists, printers and news papers, they are in majority using Apple products , here in Quebec at least, the reason is for simple, many years ago Mac was the choice for them, they get use to the Apple product and continue this way. I suspect it will be the same with the schools, they already adopt the Ipad, Windows 8 will not be ready for September, so more schools will use Ipad for the next year, the teachers will prepare program for them, other school with look at what they have already and adopt it instead of a system they have no experience with it.

Unsure if they are too late, but whether they are relevant is a whole other story.

Compared to an iPad they will be more functional, like a real computer. However, they will cost more, be more complicated, not as easy to recover when disaster strikes, and far more likely get a virus, malware, etc.

It won't be easy to catch up.

In many areas apple products are the standard - photography, advertising - and others.

Schools too now it seems.

MS have to try - tough mountain to climb.

They would do better if they got the enthusiasts and their existing customers to support win8, instead of alienating them.

Big mistake.

It is never too late to make up - how about it MS?

Here in Idaho where I live, the idiot legislature passed "reforms" to basically puts laptops or theoretically ipads into the hands of students. A nice idea, but a tech support NIGHTMARE. Kids don't always take care of a 150 dollar book, give them a 500 dollar device or a laptop with a hard drive, I don't even want to think about that...

As for tablets in education, the idea is great. Digital and up to date texts and general convenience to do school work. But that's where the ipad fails miserably: school work. Try making a PowerPoint on one. You can't, and I don't think alternatives are out there and online versions take decades of presentation software improvements and throws that out in deference to the old days where it's simply and dully designed. I can't even begin to think about the awful slideshows and let alone sitting through them.

Then there's the networking for them. That's a pickle since you usually will need to retrofit older buildings to have wireless networking everywhere and be dependable. A question for the general audience, how does one print a word document on an ipad?

The timing for the Windows tablet PC can be said is late, but the option has been there since Windows 7. It just hasn't caught on until late. A Windows 8 slate would be fantastic for education purposes. Microsoft has acquired Barnes & Noble and probably will have an app that accesses all of their material. There's a Kindle app for 8 already. Heck, even a WinRT tablet would outdo an ipad since it will have Office 2013 installed. The only question is how does one print again, but that's that.

It's always a question of what work's in education. Sure, apple wants to introduce their brainwashing for a new generation with putting ipads where it's a real, physical oxymoron: an ipad in the workplace. Some of those students I would bet intrinsically know how to use a Windows operating system and know how to use Office software. They may already know how to use ios. An ipad would work for digital books, but what about the Office software, researching the internet (flash doesn't work on ios so no YouTube), or even easily printing documents out? It would require technological adaptation to suit a device that is out of its spectrum and was never designed for such. Sure, Windows 8 maybe a bit late, but there's next year or even mid year or even a late start in September or October. The question is always what works, and I guess time will tell what works. My bet is Windows 8 is what works in education...

apple wants to introduce their brainwashing for a new generation

Are MS behaving any better?

Up till recently - I would say MS have been far less controlling than Apple.

Waiting to see what the final release is like.

I am being optimistic.

I would really like to recommend windows - I have always done so before .

A question for the general audience, how does one print a word document on an ipad?.

Will be simple if Microsoft was not delaying the release of Office for Ipad, Microsoft is afraid it will damage the sell of Windows 8 Tablets

"The issue over the release date is arguably more problematic for Microsoft because it will clearly want to avoid the Office iPad app having a detrimental impact on Windows 8 tablet sales, which could certainly be the case if the rumors are true and the two launch within weeks of each other."

I still can't see the advantages of a tablet.

I doubt I will ever have one. 4" smartphone and laptop is all one needs. For some jobs it might be useful to have a light netbook or ultrabook, but tablet, what for?

To me Windows Tablets will fail completely for these reasons:

- Very late

- Very very very expensive. Now you can buy good tablets with Android for 100€ (bq Pascal 2 ? Con Android 4.0 ICS) <- This one works very well with Android 4 ICS. Google Nexus Tablet coming soon for 200€. Why someone will pay 600€ or 1000€ for a tablet??

- Few apps

- No flash

- No direct USB file transfer

- The tablets are heavy and horizontally oriented. This will be tirying for the left hand soon as weight is not distributed as well as in iPad or Android tablets. I really look forward to reading reviews concerning this point. Also, I believe that the whole concept of the tiles and horizontal scrolling will not be popular, as it isn't in W8 or WPhone7.

Windows Tablet PCs have ranged around 500 dollars and I bet they will be in that range for Windows 8...
android tablets are awful, straight up. They have very little going for them in the enterprise and the software, wow....

Depends on if you have a WinRT tablet, you are initially limited to a few apps, but you have Office 2013 preinstalled. If you have a slate, you have every piece of software that can run well since Windows 95.

Flash is built into Windows 8 both Desktop and metro IE, so there's no issue there. USB transfer is there, though the Desktop.

Also, I don't know if you haven't seen the new Windows 8 tablets, but they're incredibly slim and incredibly light. Intel is building chips, like Ivy Bridge style chips, into Windows slates that will be reportedly slimmer than the ipad.

You'll find that the feelings toward the tiles and metro design and horizontal scrolling are liked by and disliked by around 50/50 of most given audiences. I think it will do well. And as for Windows Phone 7, ask any user or read any critic review and you'll find that the live tile concept is one of the best features of the software.....among many of course...
