End users & OEMs and Microsoft following Apple's business model!

As you may know that Microsoft is making its own "Surface" tablet as well as its own smartphone. And it seems their intention is to make everything like notebooks, desktops, ultrabooks themselves, just like Apple does and this has already created tension between MS and the OEMs. May be MS completely adopts the Apple model and stop licensing Windows 8 to OEMs and end users. I am very worried about this prospect! I am primarily a desktop user as well as I use a HP laptop. I like to build my own PC as it is cheaper and I have all the freedom to choose the hardware for it. But if what I mentioned above really happens I won't be able to do that! Its easy to say that I could simply buy the desktop made by Microsoft. But that would be very expensive as far as I think. And if MS started to build everything, I would not be able to buy Windows 8 as well as hardware to assemble my PC as the hardware manufacturers would stop making it for the general market. Also I won't be able to buy a cheaper alternative from any OEMs. Do you think that all can happen? And if that happens, what would be the possible alternatives for the end users like me? What are your views. Kindly inform.

We have to establish resistance.....

With AMD dropping the High End market, price of Hard Drive, death of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. II project, and now Windows 8; it's a very bad time for PC builders like US. I like to build high end Water Cooled PCs, but to justified 2, 3 or even 4 High End GPU in a PC , you need to use it for gaming and the way I see it; more and more games companies will drop the PC to turn to consoles, that's the real problem, for peoples who like to build PC. You can't count on games companies to code their product for Linux, it will be too much work for them, they will simply make consoles versions.

I am also a PC gamer. And I like gaming on a PC rather than a console. I primarily like Windows 7 but I was beginning to make up my mind to use Windows 8 too with all the changes made to the desktop; until I come to know that Windows 8 might be the end of everything I like. Also I don't think we the PC builders are in a position to exert any pressure as individuals. How can we? But I think the OEMs may be in a position to exert pressure if they don't waste any time and they all immediately withdraw from all Windows products they offer and boycott MS. This might pressurize MS to change course and back down from following Apple. I hate Apple and its closed policies and I loved MS just because of their open business model. I wish MS remains the same as this is good for everyone; for MS, for OEMs as well as for end users.

I wouldn't be too concerned with PC gaming since, according to some leaked Xbox documents, Microsoft plans on making the new Xbox next year to share the same core as Windows 8. So, theoretically, a great game on the new Xbox has a real easy port to the PC and vice versa.

But then again, some Xbox games aren't that great admittedly.

I don't think Microsoft is running on apple's platform so much. Sure, they made a tablet, but they have before and they've made software for a lot longer. They've been making their own hardware for 30 years, a PC is a first. A game console was a first. A motion tracking sensor was a first. A large table top touchscreen device was a first.

Basically, it's not a huge deal and it's not what apple's doing. They have a VAST, vast OEM fleet that uses Microsoft Windows and build devices accordingly. The Surface tablet is more of a rallying cry to show OEMs how to design a perfect Windows 8 slate and how to make it a quality device.

As for us, the puter builders, I'm not concerned so much about the future. Companies like Intel, AMD, ASUS, Foxconn, Gigabyte, MSi, and the others will still have to make motherboards and RAM and processors and graphics chips and solid state drives and hard drives and everything else for OEMs to put them together. People need replacement or upgrade parts and that's where places like Newegg come in. We'll still have access to those parts, granted, they maybe different and there will be more mobile designed parts; but there still will be the desktop/tower parts. The desktop isn't going away, it won't be mainstream though. It will continue to be the choice of extreme power. I doubt the quantum computer will be a tablet! :p
