It is much more than the direct income from the apps.

The success of the app store is one of the reasons people keep buying ipads.

It is also an introduction to other Apple online services.

    Apple Q2 2012 Earnings: A 94 Percent Profit Upsurge - Apple - News & Reviews - eWeek.com

March quarter record revenue of $39.2 billion equates to a 59 percent year-over-year increase; the company banked a whopping $11.6 billion in net profit over Q2 2011.
4.9 billion off apps isn't even half their profit margin and not a huge drop in the bucket.

Even then, a company like Microsoft can get 4.9 billion through a different source other than apps.

You do realise Apple makes money on the hardware and software?

    MS only sells software.
If the numbers suggest anything, it's that MS should sell overpriced hardware.

    If it's open-architecture, like a PC, I might.

    If closed, like Apple....no way.

Looks like there's figures going round everywhere about how much the fruit company earns from apps. They have paid developers $5bn and since Apple take 70% then the income to them (Apple) is around the $12bn mark.

Not sure how we got on to the fruit company so apologies for that. Just announced though that the new Surface will be a wi-fi device only.

Irrespective though as to whether you are a Win8 Metro UI lover or hater it's sure going to be an interesting few months ahead. I think we can all agree on that.

The success of the app. store is crucial. It is one of the things that keeps people using ipads.

Therefore it is vital to the profits generated.

It is not hard to understand.

Repeated for the benefit of Coke Robot.

Surface will be a wi-fi device only.
I am not sure that is a good idea - no point in limiting it.

    Hi there

    peeps --please get real.

Source for that article comes from a similar group to Gartners as we all know are speaking totally "Bowlarks" -- or a name referring to little round objects that rhyme with "Goldilocks".

And if you actually bother with whats available on the Android app store -- or play store I think Google call itn-- the FREE apps offered usually are so much better than the "paid for" ones in any case. --Users get quite savvy after a while.

A friend of mine paid a STUPID 6 GBP (approx 8.5 EUR) for a UK train time table app for his android phone when the bog standard freebie from "National Rail" was actually better and FREE.

These "App" stores eventually won't make money and the cost of makimg sure developers conform to say MS's QC will be prohibitively expensive.

By the way I also noticed a reference to Gartners again in the article.

How people can even READ what those load of B/S----ers say any more just fazes me out.

    Cheers
    jimbo.

It will be vital to the benefit of profit, UNLESS, they are more free apps than paid ones. Right now, they're all free. But we'll see about that later this year.

Tis be interesting times we live in...
