Any new big update on pipeline for Win8.1?

    Hi,

Currently we have windows 8.1 OS Version: 6.3.9600 N/A Build 9600.

Will there be any service pack or version update for windows 8.1?

No. MS will most likely only provide bug fixes for the rest of Win 8.1's support life.

Rarely are there any major updates or service packs to an OS after it's successor has been released. Considering that Windows 8.1 is not highly popular and that Windows 10 is a free upgrade makes that even less likely. A service pack for Windows 8.1 would be highly unlikely. As Windows 8.1 is still in mainline support it will receive updates for bugfixes in addition to security updates. Anything more than that is unlikely.

I must really be a minority, cos i adore W8.1

I loved 7, but didn't like 8 that much unless it was loaded with 3rd-party customisations.

But 8.1 is a cracker, and those who bypassed it have missed a truly great OS.

I did run W10 Pro since last May as my primary OS, but am back on 8.1 again.

It's not that W10 is a bad OS, but there is much I don't like. I'll put it in a VM (again) and play with it there, but it needs to mature (and MS needs to change certain aspects of their thinking, like their telemetry and forced updates) before I re-upgrade. (There is a system-image of the W10 10240 setup saved ready if I do decide to do so).

Windows 8.1 may go down in history, like Windows ME and Vista, as a failure. But it will not be because it's a bad OS, merely a misunderstood one, forever tainted by its ugly-duckling predecessor.

If 8.1 had come with a Classic Shell-style start menu, and been called Windows 9, it would almost certainly been much more successful. Sad, really...

    Wenda,
I'm kind'a with you on 8.1. No it doesn't come with anything like The Classic Shell, but that's so easy to install that it's a non-event.
And I've installed 8.1 Pro, both 32 and 64 on my own PC's, and The Classic Shell is the first thing I install.
I currently have 8.1 running happily on 10 pc's, incorporating 5 Desktops and 5 laptops.

From January 2015 to RTM, I tested Windows 10, both 32 bit and 64 bit (NO VM). I always ran it on spare HD's so I wouldn't mess up my main OS (8.1 Pro/32) which I depend on daily. In all that time I saw nothing that would make me want to have W-10 as my main OS.
The security holes in it are horrendous! The worse is probably "WUDO" and the next would have to be 'Cortana'.

So one of the best updates to 8.1 would have to be the "GWX Control Panel", where you can permanently BAN GWX (Get Windows ten).

Microsoft support for any OS is so far down on my priorities list, that it's not even visible.
I still have several PC's running XP and one ME, and they seem to work just fine with NO MS Support.
I'm sure that there must be a million or more PC users that have also found that to be true. Eh?

    Happy Holidays!

I feel the same way. I am back on 8.1 as well.. Was running Win10 Ent for several months, but with the lack of control over certain areas, re. updates and customization, I decided to toss it till I see a major improvement from MS. I too enjoy Windows 8.1. I will wait and see what the next major update for Win10 brings, but am pretty sure I will be staying with Win8.1 for the foreseeable future.

I can't stand working on a machine that has something like Classic Shell installed because it makes Win 8.x work differently than I'm used to. I only install Classic Shell on Win 8.x machines for people who are too clueless to use a Windows computer without a Start menu. As far as I'm concerned, there is no need for Classic Shell.

Personally, I never bothered with it in 8.1 either. I did have it installed in 8, but when 8.1 came out I decided to persevere without CS.

Mine's set to use All Apps as the start menu (I never see the start page). I also have Quick-Launch enabled.

    Works just fine.
