I am considering moving up from Windows 7 to Windows 8 on my computer (I have been on this forum because of my wife's computer which has 8 on it). Windows 8 ain't bad once you fix it, but I'd like to know if it's worse in this regard (privacy, "phoning home," etc.) versus Windows 7.

All Operating Systems are going to send basic system information to the servers when you check for updates, regardless if it is Windows, Linux, Mac OS, iOS or Android. Your private information is more open when using a Web Browser to do things like banking, email, etc, then what Microsoft gets. The even better part is when people are out in public telling someone on the other end, their Social Security number, name, address, phone number are the ones who would be guilty of leaking private info.

Everything about what Microsoft has the OS set up to do, is in the TOS, which you can find at microsoft.com.
