I would emphatically say NO! At This Time. I would recommend you wait possibly 6 months or so to allow time for more of the major W-10 upgrades to be implemented.

I had W-10 on one of my PC's for a full 30 days and reverted back to 8.1 and I will be following the advice I give you before I go any further.

1. Check with your PC manufacturer and/or their product Forums as to compatibility with your specific model and common issues with your brand/model.
2. Read the W-10 Forums and check out the problems many have experienced. This list is quite extensive and the problems/issues are quite diverse.
3. Whenever you do decide to upgrade to W-10, you better have a full backup image to fall back on should things go bad unless of course you are not very dependent on your device and are prepared to complete restore to factory state and you should have that capability on hand anyway. If you do not have such backup available I would STOP!
4. Make sure you fully understand the implications of little or no control of updates in W-10 as well as the increase in MS Data Mining present with W-10 depending on how some defaults are set.
5. Edge, the new built-in Browser does not yet have all the capabilities present in other Browsers.

Just because one or even a million users have upgraded without problems does not mean you are assured a trouble free experience as many will attest to. Read the Forums and you must decide but remember, this Free conversion period is still in it's early stages and you have plenty of time.

In addition, your specs indicate you are still on 8.0 and not 8.1, if this is the case I think you need to be on 8.1 do the upgrade to W-10 but I may be mistaken. If you decide to push forward, hope for the best but plan for the worst.

No. It sucks. It has too many issues, just like microsoft. They don't know what they are doing, I barely like windows 8. I like windows 7 and have the disk to upgrade and downgrade to, but the new computers have their product keys inside the computer itself.

As a poster mentioned above, the best thing to do if you're not sure is to do a system backup (I notice that there's a free offer for the paid version of EaseUS ToDo Backup Home on this site in the General Support part that might be of interest, in this regard), then once that's done you can then let it update to Windows 10 and try it out. If it doesn't work out for you, then just install from the backup, and you've lost nothing.

Personally, I'm not big on upgrades. Win 10 is a decent OS but there's nothing in it that is compelling that makes me recommend upgrading. I have machines running Win 7 and Win 8.1 that I won't be upgrading but I also recently bought a new laptop with Win 10 on it. I use all 3 OSes on a daily basis and feel there isn't a lot of difference between them.

If you're someone that has to have the latest OS on their machine then go ahead and upgrade, otherwise wait until you build or buy a new machine and then go with Win 10.

I have a SSD and start for me is 1,2,3... I hated the browser Edge. too limited as for Cortana - just another thing running to slow down your system, its why you have bing or google just another layer between you and the search engine...

Thanks for all the responses. It sounds like waiting is the best idea.

1. Will check with mfgr

2. Forums are usually filled with problems. It is usually when someone has a problem that they write a question about it. Does the Win10 forum indicate more problems than with Win 7 or 8?

3. Full backup. Check.

4. Win 10 does automatic updates without notice, right?

5. I rarely use IE now. Does the Edge browser be similarly ignored?

I think I have 8.1 now; but I don't know how to tell.

Yes.

Press Windows Key and the S key to search, then type "PC Info" (no quotes) in the search box. The info should be found there. You can also press the Windows Key and X at the same time, then click on System, where you should find similar information.

It's a matter of opinion but the Edge browser is lacking features found in other browsers such as the ability to use add-ins so IMO Edge is not quite ready for prime time and I currently ignore it.

Is Edge really an issue for determining to upgrade to Windows 10? I prefer Chrome anyway.

Edge is a new feature of Win 10. If someone really liked Edge then they would need to upgrade to Win 10 in order to use it.

I upgraded from windows 8.1 which I was having a lot of trouble with.
Like crashes and freezes and IE11 kept stopping.
Since upgrade to windows 10 Home x 64 and installed all updates.
I have had
NO crashes
No Freezes
Dumped IE11 and use Edge Browser.
Dumped Google and now use Bing
So yes I am glad I upgraded best thing I ever did

I have experience upgrading to Windows 10 and in my opinion it is not worth upgrading to but you still may want to try it and see for yourself.

I upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 8.1 using the Windows update. After doing so I then did a reset which is almost like a clean install.
I did this on one laptop and one netbook.

I'll start with the pluses. Win 10 has a pretty fast startup and shutdown. Windows 8.1 is also fast but Win 10 is slightly faster. The OS in general is pretty smooth most of the time and in some instances may be faster than Win 8.1. But not in all in my experience. It has Cortana which I find no use for on a laptop since often times you are communicating private info at home or in a public place with time tested keyboard and mouse and talking aloud defeats that. It is helpful on a Windows phone though and the voice recognition is superb. Also, the default start menu on Windows 10 is better imo than on Windows 8.1. I use classic shell on both so this is not that big of a deal though imo the start menu on Win 10 is pretty usable without classic shell with a little customizing. Okay, on to what I didn't like.

Right away, I found I did not like the way Windows 10 looks. It is very flat and simple looking. Even moreso in my opinion than Windows 8.1. It is the opposite of a beautiful looking OS like Windows 7 or even Vista with all the nice details and shadings and raised effects they have. Windows 10 looks like it was made to run a smartphone that has very low ram (500mb) since the graphics are very simple with plain colors. The whole OS in fact looks like it was made for a phone. There are programs and also "apps" (like Windows 8). There is Settings and also a control panel. It's phone focus, especially this particular phone focus, to me seems odd on a laptop or desktop OS. I'll leave it at that.

I did not like the edge browser mainly because you cannot add any add-ons. It also looks ugly and has very barebones settings. Just setting a homepage is an ordeal and seems like high functionality on it. You an scribble on it but that doesn't benefit me. It loads fast but that's about it. It seems to have a scrolling issue on some sites and I don't like the favorite section. It reminds me of apple done poorly (as does a lot of the OS looks).

The settings area features a whole section dedicated to "privacy" settings. There is a lot to shut off if you are very privacy conscious or care how updates are delivered or how wifi is shared. I think if you are very privacy concsious or suspicious, you will not like this OS.

Also, I found it right away quite buggy. I could not get the email notifications to work with the Action center in a reliable way no matter what - not even full resets which required a lot of time. I found many other people experience the same thing. Also sometimes Mail would be listed in background apps, sometimes calendar and the suggestion was to turn both on since they work together. You would think it should be one way - but still it didn't work right. This appears to be an old issue but does not affect everyone. I also did not like the photo app because it does not resize pics for email like Windows photo viewer does, though you can use WPV with some tweaking. Also, sometimes I would find settings that I thought i set one way set another way.

Though I knew going into it that Win 10 will be putting updates on the computer by default with the only way to circumvent that being turning off updates or using a tool, seeing it in practice, I really don't like having no control over the updates or not being given much info about what they do. I like to have updates downloaded but not installed so I can take a look at them first and then choose what i want. If I install anything, it will likely be in the important category but only after looking at them. You can't really do this on Windows 10.

Already with the limited time (1.5 months) I used Win 10 I saw two instances of things going wrong with the updates. 1st there was an update that set many settings back to default which was annoying. You had to go through all the settings to make sure it's how you want it. Then another update had a failed install which required a CMD command to correct. My fear is one day they push something that creates a lot more problems than what I've seen so far.

So anyway, I had accidently deleted a backup I made on a flashdrive for win 8.1 and was beyond the time allowed to go back to Windows 8.1 so I ordered recovery media at a cost of $45 and reinstalled Windows 8.1. I'm very happy I did. Now I have control back. The programs and settings work great. I blocked all the windows 10 update stuff by uninstalling and hiding the updates as well as doing the registry tweak to block the update. I can also see clearly that Win 8.1 is still faster with some stuff... firefox seems faster on it for example. Also, the email notifications seem to work very well.

I still have win10 on an unimportant netbook. I'm not sure if I will keep it on there ultimately. I keep it there mainly to keep up to date with how win 10 is progressing and have some familiarity with it but I'm thinking I will likely go back to Windows 8.1.

I've only had Windows 10 for a few days on my Dell laptop but so far I've had the following issues and changes to make:

  • BSODs due to an errant NVidia graphics driver installed by Windows. The Dell driver is fine but Windows keeps updating it despite turning off automatic updates.
  • The Realtek card driver is temperamental and keeps disappearing. I've tried various driver options to no avail.
  • I still prefer the Classic Shell menu to the new Start menu - but you can have both if you configure Classic Shell correctly
  • There is no option to have a custom refresh image since the recimg command is no longer provided
  • Microsoft Updates have been buggy. Today Microsoft supplied an update for Outlook 2010 which caused to always start in Safe mode - that update has now been withdrawn

As always, any new release will have bugs. Whether it effects you is up in the air until you learn the hard way. ;)

IMO, Windows 10 seems like Windows 8 "desktopized". They put corner buttons back and every app behaves like a "window" now, albeit quite bizarre in some cases. They returned the corner pop-up Start Menu that's sort of a hybrid for Windows 8. But if you want a full screen tablet experience it feels kinda bizarre to have corner buttons and task bars where you can put you finger on it by accident and make it go even crazier than before! They also seem to have reduce the gesture controls in favor for tapping.

Overall, I think ppl were having trouble with getting used to Windows 8 Start Screens so M$FT caved into the traditional desktop lovers while still hoping you'd get hook to the "App Store" like Apple fans.

As for Edge, it's more like Safari for IOS I guess...as opposed to a traditional desktop browser. But traditional IE is still there, you just have to find it and pin it to the taskbar. So I don't think edge should be a decision factor, especially if you use Chrome or FF anyway.
