Solved Partition Puzzlement. The numbers don't add up.

I'm sure there is probably a simple explanation to this...

I've just fitted a new 250Gb SSD to my laptop (awesome results by the way) and I'm puzzled over how to interpret the Diskpart info. I partitioned the drive into four partitions of, C=70Gb, D=30Gb, Y=100Gb and Z=30Gb which is shown in Disk Management correctly. Diskpart however lists an extra 'Partition 0' of 132Gb. Puzzled

You used MBR partitioning instead of GPT right?

An HDD may contain only one extended partition, but that extended partition can be subdivided into multiple logical partitions. DOS/Windows systems may then assign a unique drive letter to each logical partition.

Hi Cliff.

I clean installed W8.1 onto unallocated space on the new drive by using the install disk to create the first partition. I made that deliberately small and then expanded it to 70Gb later, finally creating the other partitions in order. All done using Windows Disk Management.

Ah, I think I get it now... the extended is the addition of the logical drives PLUS the free space.

GPT. I'm just looking that up now (lol)... no, my PC doesn't support UEFI so it was just a traditional install.

No problem, one of the advantages of GPT(aside from UEFI) is you don't need logical partitions inside of and extended, you can have hundreds of partitions, where as MBR you can create a maximum of 4 Primary partitions, or 3 Primary partitions and 1 Extended partition with up to 128 logical volumes in the extended partition on a single hard disk.
