    password mess up.

I have currently been asked by a friend to sort out his laptop, the only issue is someone who borrowed it from my friend has set a password that is used when you switch on the laptop, its a windows 8 system running on a lenovo ideapad laptop, im unsure how to get the password off without doing a full system reboot, have tried the usual f8 for boot manager but it doesnt seem to have the system reset on there any help would be much appreciated. many thanks

Sounds like a BIOS password, not a Windows password. If so you may not be able to remove it without knowing the password.

On Desktop systems there is often a Clear CMOS jumper you can use but on a Laptop????? You could try unplugging the power, removing the battery and letting it sit for awhile, like a couple hours) then plug in the power and power up, see what happens. If okay, load defaults in BIOS Setup and set the date and time and you're all set.

Contact the friend and get the password is the best solution.

    Welcome to the forum.

If this is a BIOS password you have a serious problem. Many people have a laptop that contains data that should not fall into the wrong hands. The BIOS password was designed to prevent this. For most laptops built in the current century the password is not stored in the CMOS and cannot be easily removed. It would not serve it's designed purpose if it were easily removed. Reinstalling the OS will not effect a BIOS password, assuming you were somehow able to do this.

If you are not able to obtain the password you will need to contact the manufacturer and be prepared to prove ownership. Likely there will be a cost.
