    lost desktop icons

    hello everyone

just updated my computer, but when I turned it back on there were no desk top icons, it was saying

    C:Windows\SYstem32\Config\System profile\Desktop is not accessible.
I did a system restore but that did not work. I switched off computer last night, but when I switched on this morning
all of the desk top icons were back.
Can someone tell me what has happened, and will it happen again.

    Regards Calmat

Well, this is embarrassing. I downloaded Win 8 and I've been futzing around with it and recently performed a "refresh" that knocked out most of my previous apps. Went to System Restore but found out that no restore points had been set up. Tried to configure it but it wouldn't set a date and time...
Is there any way to get back the active desktop that Microsoft took out with Vista? I'd love to be able to make my own interactive desktops with javascript/HTML like I did with XP and earlier.
