GWX Icon. Should I be seeing this under these conditions ?

Long story cut short. I have a W8.1 running with Windows Update turned OFF. This is a W8.1 image from May this year. The GWX icon has just appeared in the tray. How can that be when updates are OFF. Only Defender updates have been added so far.

I notice that KB3035583 was installed, which is one of the updates that'll give you GWX, etc, sending you down the tedious install Windows 10 journey. If you have set your Windows Update settings to treat recommended updates the same as important ones, then KB3035583 will get automatically installed due to its recommended status being given the same treatment as important updates. In Windows Update, you can in its settings change this behaviour by unselecting the setting that treats recommended updates the same as important ones.

Hey Mooly, :)

Hey Shawn !

Its not been a good couple of weeks has it, at least not for me and W8.1. So I'm going to have to run the reg fix again... actually I can see that Gort has spotted the reason below. Unfortunately May is the last disk image I can go back cleanly to because I installed a new printer then.

Here's a question for you ;)

In twelve months time the free W10 offer is finished. Will all the W8.1/W10 compatibility updates get removed from the Windows update servers so that a clean (a true clean) W8.1 install would be possible once more ?

Thanks, well spotted. Up until yesterday I always had Windows set to notify only, as of now its OFF. Just to many things going wrong each time updates are released. Yesterday it was the weather app problem. This May image is working perfectly.

I would think that once the free Windows offer expires after July 2016 there wouldn't be anymore nags or updates about it.
