ok just looked and i got lost after first shawn's suggestion - sorry - you really tried to help - i'm o.k. Now ...once on line finally i went to lower right -brought up the ''charms'' /settings /that got me into ''change pc settings/users/sign in options and then choose ''change password'' and that did work - it was the same thing i did originally to set up password that 'was' working 'until' i tried to get rid of needing a password when i booted up . While i'd like not to need a pw to get to the desktop after booting up, i'll just live with it because it seems 'tricky' trying to eliminate a password, once it is in place.... Many many thanks !~!!!

Just use what I suggested in post #4 with "netplwiz" and it will boot to your desktop directly, what happens is Windows logs you in automatically then. Other than that, you're very welcome

here's what you wrote: As long as it accepted it you're good. You may want to leave it that way or type in netplwiz and untick user must enter password and then enter your password twice, OK I SAW WHERE TO UNCHECK ''USER MUST ENTER PASSWORD'' BUT I DON'T SEE ANYPLACE ON THAT AREA TO ENTER MY PASSWORD ... and then you won't have to enter the password again unless you change the setting(this is what I do

ahhhh ok got it !!! ..here's the thing: Way it is setup now is only thing i'm asked for is ''password'' ...just one line - i don't have to type in a user-name plus a password .... And i don't have a 'user name' (that i know of ) i think i'll just leave well=enough alone and live with having to type on the one line using my password (that's all is asked for) and then get to desktop ... You've been very kind to try and help ...i just don't want to end up back to square-one ....i'm sure you understand - best - edythe
(besides i'll have to upgrade to 8.1 soon in order to qualify for '10 and maybe 8.1 will be a different method to get out of a setup password - lol

you really tried !!! You're right about a 'password' being more 'secure' ...no one uses this machine but me but what the heck ...if i eventually get a new machine no one could get into it when i ''toss' it ..
Many many thanks for all the trouble you went to ...so very much appreciated !!
