Hi Windows 8 helpers,

I have a HP Pavilion notebook, model: 15-B010TU.

About 2 years old, generally runs OK, but have recently been experiencing it freezing and sometimes slow to start up, it also has only had Avast Antivirus programme running in the background.

I also had the "please wait" page frozen on screen for about 12 hours before it thankfully sorted itself out.

Just wanting some advice on how to look after my notebook better? any system cleanouts I can run, system scans, virus (free) software I can use?

Any advice would be much appreciated, thank you :D

There can be a lot of different causes of lock ups/slow boots. It is hard to know exactly what is causing it without doing some elimination.

First I would run some optimizations if you havent already. First step I would take is to download CCleaner. Run that to clean out any junk files from your system. It might take a while if it has a lot to do, so be patient with it.

Second, run these commands in an elevated command prompt:

sfc /scannow

dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

sfc /scannow

Wait for each command to finish processing before going onto the next. Each will take a while to complete so please give it enough time.

Third, I would run a disk defrag program to optimize the drive. Download Defraggler and give it time to run. If a defrag has never been done, this will take a good amount of time to run, probably on the order of 3-4 hours easily, if not more.

After all of that, I would check what is running at startup. To do this, I would use Autoruns and look under the logon tab. Uncheck whatever you dont need. If your not sure about something, best bet would be to leave it alone.

All of this should help at least a little bit. Try all of that and let us know what happens.

thank you, further questions.

Hi,

Thank you for your reply and your suggestions.

I have tried all of them, and the computer does seem to be running slightly faster and smoother now.

Just a couple of questions:

- I have CCleaner now, how often would you suggest I do a scan? Or should I just let it run in the background?
- I downloaded Autoruns, however not sure how to use it properly and can't figure it out, I have attached a screenshot of where it's sitting, can you offer some advice please?
- Finally, the Defrag has been completed, do I need to do anything with these files? I have attached a screen shot of that also.

Thank you so much for your help :)
