Windows Search Options

Hello, I used to be able to do searches for partial matches for names of files..
for example, there is a file named: 12345.mp3
and if I search for: 34
then the result will show up. Now that is no longer the case.

That is how the search options used to look like in the computer, but now it looks like this other picture that I've uploaded... notice something missing?



What the heck happened to "Find partial matches"?

Can I fix this in the Registry or even in Local Group Policy?

Also, why did it disappear?

Why did what disappear? Any file that you want to search for, it has always been like the following (*.jpg, *.exe, monthly_2*.*).

You have always had to use a Wildcard for anything that you do not know the file name, but only know the extension. In reality, if you separate pictures, etc. into the appropriate folder. You should be able to easily find the file. There are better search tools out there.

Ultra Search is probably one of the fastest and best ones out there. It uses the MBR (Master Boot Record), vs the Index file that Search uses. https://www.jam-software.com/ultrasearch/

The difference between the two pictures is that the first picture has an extra option on top that says "Find partial matches".
It is possible that I am remembering this incorrectly, that this was an option in a previous Windows version. Yet why didn't Microsoft keep it simple to where if I searches using my example above, it would find what I want?
Anywho, thanks for the suggestion for that program. I'll keep it in mind, yet the activity that I'm doing requires that I need to be using File Explorer.

But still, thank you for your suggestion.

I don't have the tickbox for partial matches either, however searching from File Explorer finds partial matches by default for me. For example here is a search for 'NV' in the 'Nvidia Corporation' folder, where it brings up partial file/folder name matches:




I have Windows indexing disabled, so I don't know whether that changes the default behaviour and is why partial matching works for me, but not for you. Does *42* work like mentioned in the previous post? You can also check out the following link for more info on advanced search operators. Maybe try using 'name:' first and see if that helps (I.E name:34 like shown in part 2 at the link):

Alright thanks for your reply. I looked at that post, it's useful and has lots of tips. The thing that I wanted the search to do though is to be able to find results of 'a certain phrase' mid-number. So I tried name:34, but it doesn't show the file 12345.mp3.. it shows files that start with '34'

The * works for words, but not numbers apparently. It's okay though, I'll figure something alternate that I can do. Thanks for the posts.

The * and ? Wildcards still works on anything that you do not know the exact file name, but know the extension. See the following for further help: Windows 8.1 Search Tips & Tricks

Personally I find Ultra Search to be the fastest when you have folders that can get up to 500 GB.
