so i need a little help getting rid of this issue thats been happening for awhile now. a few days ago this pop up started appearing on startup and then it opens again after some time has passed. there doesnt seem to be any condition where i can predictably recreate it, it just pops up unexpectedly and ,more often than not, kicks me out of fullscreen mode on the applications i use. any help is appreciated

Try this, see if you can identify what is generating the error:

Download and run ProcessExplorer. It does not need to be installed.

Drag-and-drop target to find an image. If you're not sure which application corresponds to which image in Process Explorer, click and drag the little gun sight icon on the Process Explorer toolbar, and drop it on any visible window to find out what process/image it is.
Once the error message is on the screen, start ProcessExplorer and drag the target icon and drop it on the error message window. It will show the process that generated that window highlighted in blue in the PE window.

Then use msconfig Startup (or Taskmanager Startup) and Services tabs to find and disable that process.

the process was OpenWith.exe and i researched a bit about it and i think something in my system is triggering it on occasion though i cant figure out which process/application is doing it. i tried using the safe boot option in msconfig to test if it would still pop out, and it still did.

Something else is triggering the OpenWith.exe. Its trying to open a file or a link stored on your computer. One thing I would highly recommend doing is running malware scans especially if this is not coming up with something you are doing.

RES is a protocol that is usually associated with a web browser. On my system it is set to open with Internet Explorer.

Open control panel and click on default programs > associate a file type or protocol with a program

Set Default Programs.PNG
Set Default Programs 2.PNG

Then scroll down to the RES protocol

Set Default Programs 3.PNG

Hightlight the RES protocol and clock on change program. Internet explorer should appear within the choice you are presented with. Highlight it and click OK. Now the link should open.

Search your computer and see where any .res files are located. That may help identify the cause.

i tried your suggestion Arazel and it helped pinpoint the issue. as for the malware scan you suggested... i dont think its gonna be necessary since the issue itself was coming from my antivirus which is Avira. im reinstalling it and will mark as solved if it stops
