Back to Windows 8 OEM from Vista

I had Windows 8 already installed on my laptop when I bought it three years ago but, stupidly, didn't create an installation disk.

I recently updated to 10 but think a virus caused it to blue screen to a stage where it couldn't even reboot. I then had to revert back to an old installation of Vista I had lying around.

But now I want to update back to 8 at least and can't do this without buying Windows 8, according to Micorsoft's website:

Upgrade to Windows 8.1 from Windows Vista or Windows XP - Windows Help

There surely has to be a way around this considering I have a Windows 8 OEM key embedded in the computer.

Any suggestions much appreciated.

It won't let me because I'm currently on Vista.

I currently get this message when I go to install the media creation tool:

Upgrade Assistant can only be started from Windows 7. Windows 8.1 is not designed for installtion on devices running Windows XP or Vista.

Hm, that throws a wrinkle into things. Do you have a friend who could download an ISO for you? I' don't know of another official source, other than MSDN. You need a subscription to download from MSDN. The only other option I ca think of is to order a set of recovery disks from the manufacturer.

You need to get either a Windows 7 or 8 disk. There is a link in the tutorials that Brink put up for 8. You will still need a license.

Except -- the only option in the link that would give them what they need is Option #1 -- and as they already said, they can't run the Media Creation tool as it requires Win7 or newer.

Not if you don't have an ISO? If you can't run the Media Creation Tool you can't download any media.

I found the link on Microsoft.com for just Windows 8 Upgrade Media creation. Upgrade Windows with only a product key - Windows Help It may or may not work with the OEM install on the computer. I opt for Blackmagic1 to just call the mfg for the restore discs. They are usually around $15 for shipping.

There is a trick you can do in IE to make the web site think your using a Cell Phone etc. F12 Emulation or something. I can't remember if it was for the Windows 8.1 Media Creation Tool or the Windows 10 one. I think it was the Windows 10 one. When you did it, it gave you direct links to an ISO without having to run the setup. I'll see if I can find it again. I only just remembered it. Memory isn't what it used to be.

No good if you have an OEM key though. That alternate download won't accept OEM keys and you can't download without entering a key. That's the way it was anyway. I haven't used it since the Media Creation Tool went online.
