Determine if 8.1 is preinstalled or was updated from 8

I bought a used PC that still has the user's crap on it. I was going to reset it, but was curious if it would go back to 8 or stay at 8.1.

What could I check on the PC that might tell me if it was originally Windows 8 or 8.1?

Is there a Windows 8.1 KB I should look for or something similar?

I thought about checking the manufacturer site, but sometimes the OS versions can differ with each series.

I'm hoping I can verify it from the PC.

I dont know of any other way than to look at the root of your C: drive and see if there is a folder called Windows.old which would be left behind by the upgrade process. Either way it doesnt really matter. Even if it came with 8 on it, you can reset it and it will automatically get updated to 8.1 from there, and then Windows 10 if you like.

Good to know. I just didn't feel like going through the whole upgrade process from 8 to 8.1.

Just visited the HP site and it says it should have Windows 7.

My wife's computer is just a few days old. It's a home built machine on an Asus P8H61 mb, with intel i3-2100, 4MB of Corsair ram, and a new 120GB SSD. I have Win 8.1 x64, Office 2013, and Malwarebytes installed (and a few other apple phone support products) - that's about it. It ran fine all...
I recently purchased a new 11" Dell laptop with 4GB of RAM running Windows 8.1 and a relatively weak processor (Quad core Pentium - compared with an i3,i5,i7). I know that replacing my 5400RPM hard drive with an SSD can vastly improve my performance, but I'm also wondering if upgrading my RAM to...
Hi, I'm getting hopelessly confused by the fact that I have changed my password online (Microsoft Account) but now when I log in on my PC it says wrong password and won't log me in automatically. I have tried the tutorial here but it throws me off after I fill in the new password. Besides this is...
I built a new computer, and now have both a SSD and HDD setup. My intention was to have the SSD be only for Windows and use the HDD for everything else. I feel like that everything I download is going to the SDD and I am not getting any prompts for where to install applications. For example, I...
I've installed W8.1 on a Dell Vostro 3750 laptop and am seeing start times in the sub 15 second region. That is the total time from hitting the power button to being online here. Wonderful. The older Acer laptop (8 yr old 9301) that I trialled W8.1 on doesn't achieve this. In fact its start up...
I've had this problem for awhile, finding strange but not necessarily harmful files, and wondering which program created them, so I can determine if they're safe to delete. I've tried Googling the file extensions, sometimes it yields answers, sometimes not. I'm guessing I would have to install a...
