Determine if 8.1 is preinstalled or was updated from 8

I bought a used PC that still has the user's crap on it. I was going to reset it, but was curious if it would go back to 8 or stay at 8.1.

What could I check on the PC that might tell me if it was originally Windows 8 or 8.1?

Is there a Windows 8.1 KB I should look for or something similar?

I thought about checking the manufacturer site, but sometimes the OS versions can differ with each series.

I'm hoping I can verify it from the PC.

I dont know of any other way than to look at the root of your C: drive and see if there is a folder called Windows.old which would be left behind by the upgrade process. Either way it doesnt really matter. Even if it came with 8 on it, you can reset it and it will automatically get updated to 8.1 from there, and then Windows 10 if you like.

Good to know. I just didn't feel like going through the whole upgrade process from 8 to 8.1.

Just visited the HP site and it says it should have Windows 7.
