"This file does not have a program associated"

Hi, this is my first time here. I have an issue that I would like solved as soon as possible. I recently got this error. I've spent a good amount of hours surfing the web for a solution but I haven't found one. Whenever I plug in my flash drives I always come up with this error. I am still able to access my files in my flash drives. I've done system restores, ran malware, updated windows, and merged the registry for drive and directory from Default File Associations - Restore in Windows 8 . I'm currently stumped at how I should fix this error. I've attached an image of the error I've been getting. Any suggestions to fix this would be great. Thanks!

When using system restore, did you pick a restore point that was made before this error started happening?

When you merged the reg file into your registry, did you run it as admin, then proceed to restart afterwards?

Does this come up right after plugging the drive in, or when you try to access it? If it happens as soon as you plug the drive in it may be an issue with autoplay.

Try looking at this tutorial: Enable or Disable Autoplay for Drives

If its an issue with autoplay, disabling it for drives may cure this error for you.

Hi, by disabling autoplay for removable drives seems to have cured this error for me. I just changed my removable disk option in autoplay under control panel to take no action. The error comes up right after I plug my drive in. And to answer your previous questions, I did set it to a restore point before this error occurred and whenever I run regedit , it always runs as administrator. I also restarted my laptop whenever I merged a reg file to my registry.

Would you happen to know the source of this error? If I'm missing the file to start autoplay, would you happen to know where I could download it?

    Thank you very much.

I was doing some searching and I ran across this:

This file does not have a program associated - Microsoft Answers

It doesnt describe your exact issue, but I think it could end up being a fix. One post there describes an issue with a autorun.inf file in the root folder of a drive. If this file is corrupt or points to a program/service that is not on the machine it will give this error.

Plug the drive in and open your File Explorer. Access the root folder of the drive and go to your view tab and check the box that says "Hidden Items". If an autorun.inf file shows up, delete that file. This may fix the autoplay issue you are having. To be certain that it is fixed, you will have to re enable your removable drives autoplay.

I have tried the method in that post using the command prompt. It can't locate any autorun.inf in the root folder of my drive. I've looked through my folders with hidden items checked and still didn't find an autorun.inf file.
