I screwed up the "Windows/CURSORS" FOLDER causing an error

Hello everyone,

I tried to describe the problem in words and PICS but it was getting so difficult/complex and essentially, confusing to explain it, that I decided to make a video uploaded to YouTube called:

https://youtu.be/rBFlDwo7hf4

The video explains everything in detail. It has to do with changing the regular mouse-pointers with a set called BIG RED POINTERS. These RED pointers are fantastic for making videos because they are so big and visible.

I have done this process with many systems (XP, Win 7, Win 8.1) for the past 10 years and this process has always worked. This time, I changed the process by DELETING some items from the Windows/Cursors FOLDER and that, apparently, is causing an error, probably with the Register, that I have no idea how to fix.

TIA

Something else, I tried RESTORING to two different points and the restores failed both, even with the antivirus and malware disabled.

Really not going to look at a video. Why are you deleting system folders at a whim? They are there for a reason. Now all you can do is a Repair install. http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/26095-repair-install-windows-8-a.html

After you repair Windows, please for the sake of your sanity and everyone else's. Stop removing the system folders. If you are getting short on space, move any documents, videos, photo's, to either Cloud Storage or something like the Toshiba Canvio 1TB portable hard drive.

Can't you just Browse & select a cursor ?
It doesn't matter where the .cur file is stored-

David the problem is that they deleted system folders. That means someone was naughty and now they have to do a Repair of their Windows install.

After the system is repaired he can just create a folder somewhere & add cursors to it for present & future use. :)

It is not good to delete system files. :(

I keep icons & cursors in a folder unto themselves on my Desktop.

Same thing I do David. I usually will just keep them in my Downloads folder, for any programs that are Portable. Something like add-on's like the cursor, probably easier to just create a sub-folder under the User folder or documents. I do not like placing anything on the Desktop, because I am always in a web browser or program and hate having to do the Windows key "D" or Peek.

We gave you the solution to fix your mistake. You Fubar'd it. You need to learn the same as how the rest of us taught ourselves how to handle problems. This is really the only way that you can understand what you need to do.

If you do not want to follow how to repair the OS, you will never get it running.

Broe23,

Thank you for your help, but I have to tell you, that I sense certain "hostility" and don't understand why or where does it come from. But I can tell you that it is unusual from an established, serious website such as this one. Your comment about "I don't watch videos" is one example. Why? What is wrong with videos? Why is it that YOU could not watch a video? If at the end everyone would save time? A video is simply another FANTASTIC tool to teach or explain things thoroughly.

As to the solution to ME directly? I missed it... I saw a "conversation" among several members, but no one came to me DIRECTLY and said "TS..... or whatever, your best shot is to re-install Windows 8." Because that is what I think you are saying... instead I heard a lot to trash as to how we all should be "good boys" and never make mistakes.

I am a 68 year old, my first computer was a 386... lol, and I've learned a lot about computers through the years, but I CERTAINLY don't know computers to the degree many of younger and more experienced guys do. So from time to time, yes, I screw up... sorry.

Anyway thank you all for your help.

I am not being hostile. I am stating fact. We gave you the info to fix it. Take it or leave it.

Yes I do not watch YouTube videos that people post. Because it does nothing to help walk someone through a problem like this.

I look at videos that are linked by someone who needs help as time wasters. They get you nowhere in helping someone.

I am not that young. But I have been around computers since the Home Brew Computer Club days.

Had an Exidy Sorcerer first, then at 12 in 1979, I helped my father build a H/Z-89. Used CP/M to code in .asm and Basic. Wrote a remote terminal program when I was 13.

I broke a lot of installs over that time. Did it, so that I could teach myself how to fix and debug OS and hardware issues.

Just stating that we can only help, if you work with us. If the repair does not work, we have some other tricks to try.

Try copying the cursor folder from your other computer.
You can put it on a usb.
Once it is replaced, test it.

Then download your red cursor package again & put it in a folder you created for it.
Then if the cursor folder you replaced works, use Browse to locate the folder you created that contains your red cursors & pick the ones you want.

This should work.

Post back results. :)

TS

Id really appreciate it if you wouldnt cop an attitude with the people who are taking time out of their day and life to help you fix an issue with your computer, something that they are in no way required to do.

You were indeed given a solution to your issue. In the very second post in this thread in fact. broe23 gave you a link there to a tutorial on this forum on how to perform a repair install of Windows 8 as the best bet to cure your problem right now.

Please read posts from other users more carefully from now on. More often than not they will have the solution right there, or at least start pointing you in the right direction for a solution.
