Hi folks
My wife's ASUS laptop currently operates on Windows 8.1 - we upgraded to the 8.1 from the disastrous version 8.0 a few days after I bought it for her last Christmas. I see that she is now entitled to a free upgrade to Windows 10 and was wondering if anyone can advise me if they have done this already and, if so, what the benefits/drawbacks are and whether or not she should upgrade to 10 or stay on version 8.1 for now.
Many thanks for potential replies in anticipation:confused:

Hi halfpenny1,

Currently I wouldn't upgrade to windows 10, because there are many bugs that needs to be fixed.
Usually microsoft will fix the most problems in a few months.

If you're planning on upgrading it is smart to first create a full backup of your current system so you can always reverse back.
When you upgrade to windows 10, it is smart to do a clean install after, a clean install of windows 10 will get rid of a lot of problems.

A tip from me personal, I'm active at the BSOD part of the tenforums.
Wait some time before upgrading if you want to upgrade, this because the drivers aren't yet (fully) compatible with windows 10 and so will give you bluescreens if you don't have much luck, even when you clean installed windows 10.
These problems are ofcourse not all caused by the drivers, but also by preinstalled software from ASUS and other known to cause problems software like Daemon tools and alcohol 120%.

Could not agree more with axe0. Ended up clean installing 8.1 again because 10 crippled my use of the computer. So many problems I got slapped with the moment I upgraded, and the system apps like Mail are about half as useful as they were in 8.1. For some reason they stripped features and haven't got around to adding them back again. Groove music is absolutely awful too. Lacks the most basic features that any music player should have. All this being said W10 has huge potential. The features they added to the OS are fantastic even if they're bugged out in the early release stages.

Thanks to you both for your detailed advice; sounds pretty clear that I should delay any upgrade and keep things as they are for now. Regards. HP1:D

Anyone interested about it Google: "windows 10 privacy issues" it is disturbing to say the least. They clearly state they can access your personal files, emails, contacts, pretty much anything they want and for 4 very broad reasons.

Thanks mate - that does sound pretty scary although I'm sure they've been doing it for years as and when they need to. GCHQ monitors just about everything so it's no great shakes for either MS or one of the government departments to monitor someone's laptop or PC if they 'have a need' to. i'm sure that the original MS windows platform was set up so they can do this - ie when you delete on front end the file stays hidden in your database. I'll Google as you suggest though
