Hi there
Ms is barking up the wrong tree trying to get Nokia on board -- Android for SAMSUNG and HTC and of course APPLE's own Iphone have now relagated Nokia to not even "Also Ran" status.

I don't know ANYBODY who would even LOOK at a Nokia phone any more --never mind about even THINKING about actually buying one.

So why would Ms go after this market -- SAMSUNG and HTC --great phones from both companies -- and they aren't going to switch from Android to Windows.

Nokia is sinking faster than the Titanic and even with huge cuts they are unlikely to survive for too much longer (sorry Finns -- they used to be a great company who virtually "invented" the affordable portable mobile phone).

The markets seems to agree too.

BBC News - Nokia cuts another 10,000 jobs as losses deepen

Currently, Windows 8 has little to do with Windows Phone. They share some elements, but they're an entirely different code base. this may change over time as WinRT seeps into the phone market.

Nokia is the third largest handset maker in the world. That's nothing to sneeze at, and they exceed HTC's sales by quite a bit. Yes, their stock performance has dropped through the floor, but that's largely a result of PERCEPTION rather than a strong analysis of Nokia's finances.

The new Nokia Lumia is getting a lot of good reviews. Hell, even Steve Wosniak (the creator of the Apple II and major Apple icon) says the lumia is his second favorite device (behind the iPhone of course).

Nokia is in a transition period. They will weather the storm, and come out to a strong outlook.

As a kid even though I didn't know much about phones Nokia phones always seemed to have the best reception and were nice to look at. I actually want a lumia. I haven't really tried out the windows phones(besides trying them out at stores) but I would say they could definitely make the UI look a little better and better use of typography basically the same thing as windows 8. But I would say if I had to buy a phone of all 3 I would prefer one made by Nokia as their lumia was are nice and sleek. I own a HTC phone at the moment and it's horrible. But that could just be person experience. My first samsung phone was nice but the one I had prior to the HTC broke from sliding it up too much. Black screen not that the phone actually broke into pieces. I think if Nokia can make good phones it would be the better one to choose to use to market their brand. Also of all the phone companies it seems only Nokia really actually market's their windows phone. But yes it might sink but I hope not because of the 3 brands Nokia seems to be the one who is actively marketing their product and the operating system. I have seen one HTC windows phone commercial and none for samsung at all. This is my guess.

I've owned quite a few Nokia phones over the years and all were very durable, high quality items with outstanding reception and call audio quality. I wouldn't hesitate for a second to get the Lumia with Windows Metro IF MS decides to all the option for desktop users to have the default boot to desktop everytime.

I'm not sure Nokia will sink, the Lumia range is selling quite well, feature phones are still going down, so I think this whole thing is just restructuring.
I'm not saying things are looking fantastic, but I dont think its going to sink, but then I like Metro, so what would I know.

Well, ignoring the point that the article's author is a bit of an AAPL and Samsung backer, the article misses some key points. Nokia really no longer makes an OS - they make devices and pretty much ship Microsoft's OS. I don't know if 10,000 people were working on OS development, etc, but this isn't as bad as it would seem. Nokia needs to shed costs and become more efficient as a device manufacturer, and to do so they needed to do 3 things - one, become focused on one platform (they chose WinPhone over their in-house OS); two, consolidate device hardware, move into emerging markets and get back into the NA market (they chose to do this by making low, mid, and upper-mid-level devices that all share similar internal components); and three, shed costs (by now making fewer hardware designs and no longer needing to write and maintain their own OS and application stacks, they don't need the number of employees necessary to do this).

Nokia needs to save themselves, and Symbian and their trajectory previously was when the slide started. Moving to Microsoft's OS (rather than Android) was a choice to save money and get support from the vendor (rather than being a support and development point), but they needed to do (much) more. Shedding labor, if you can survive at the levels you will shed to, is a very wise way to try and stop a freefall.

We don't know if it will work, but it was ultimately necessary (and probably somewhat necessitated by their change in business model as well).

Well, Nokia is, as already said, the third largest phone makers in the world. They were the company that built phones of great durability and were the ones that were there before the iphone.

Having said that, they are tanking, due to android and iphone. They have their Symbian OS, but that hasn't become mainstream at all. Nokia is in a position where they need something new and fresh and Microsoft needs a phone manufacturer that has build quality and marketing strength, like the model they have with Windows.

As for Windows 8, that has NOTHING to do with Windows Phone. Two different beasts. Right now Windows Phone 7 is off Compact Embedded kernel, while Windows 8 is NT kernel. Windows Phone 8 will merge the two kernels together. Notably, networking stack from what I've read.

And as for HTC and Samsung, bleh. Seriously, HTC phones look SO similar to one another, it's honestly gross. An HTC Trophy running Windows Phone looks like an android phone and can be confused for one. The HTC HD7 running Windows Phone can be confused for a similar looking android phone too. Samsung, they're nicer with design. But they're ok. Nokia though, being a Finnish company with design as one of their trades, can make a phone for Windows Phone like no other. The Lumia 800 was marketed as the first Windows Phone because when you look at that compared to the rest, that kind of rings true.

The same goes for the Lumia 900. It's built for Windows Phone. They use their ClearBlack screens that make the Live Tiles of Windows Phone just pop. It's fantastic! You see NOTHING other than the tiles and the color and the content. You honestly can't tell where the screen ends and the phone begins.

Yes, the platform isn't doing well, as of now. The Lumia 900 has got to be the most popular phone running Windows Phone. Even days before it was released, it was on preorder on the amazon.com and literally a couple days before release, it was the NUMBER ONE most popular phone. I think a month later, it still was in the top five in 5th place. The word is being spread, not only is there a phone maker dedicated for Windows Phone, there is now a cellular carrier putting their marketing oomph behind Windows Phone: att. Their store reps all use one, the even have a section in their stores from what I've seen dedicated for Windows Phone. Even when you walk in, there usually will be a banner showing off the Lumia 900 as "beautifully different."

It's something new, something fresh. After having one since April, I can't even begin to imagine using android, even the latest version, or an iphone that will never change, EVER. android isn't a phone, it's a minicomputing device that happens to have a phone built in, and iphone isn't focused whatsoever on the PHONE part but on apps. Windows Phone is the only platform that does something that now apple is trying to do with ios 6: put people first.

And that is the best part.

I really wish I could get my Nokia phone back from the early 2000's that lasted nearly a week on a charge. This constant charging on the new phones is a pain in the butt. Of course, having the web, applications and gmail is a real nice bonus on the new phones. Guess I would miss that a little bit if I took a major step backwards.

Oh I know! Luckily though, I'm going to build in a power station into my car so I can have my phone charging at any time without any drain on the car's battery as well as some additional power outlets. Time to get creative.... :D

i just get annoyed that with my Droid, if I take it off my charging dock at home, have it on me all day at work and get home and try to go for a run, it seems like I don't have enough juice to use my Amazon MP3 cloud player and RunKeeper with GPS tracking on the phone without having to charge it for awhile.

That sucks. My Nokia Lumia 900 has enough power to go on through the day. I can use apps and their live tiles, stream music to my car stereo through Bluetooth, take some pictures (which are fantastic with the lens on it), and still have enough to talk and text. I once talked on it for about an hour with only 8 percent left on the battery and STILL had power to text people and go onto some apps!

I personally would like to try out this Lumia 900 from Nokia, the tiles look cool but one thing that upsets me about it is that it doesn't have the popularity like the iPhone 4S. I just completely agree that Apple products are way overrated.

Oh you must! Find an att retailer, they'll have one. If not one, they'll have a black one, a white one, and a cyan one. They're pretty cool. As for popularity, that might change soon. Att is putting some effort in promoting it in their stores and on TV. There was a commercial promoting att that had the phone in it. It sucks though that when people recommend a "smart" phone, they say get an iphone or a droid. droids suck. iphone is HUGELY overrated. A Windows Phone does just that, a phone in the modern times that connects you with your people better than the others, and that's where I think is lost these days...

Speaking of Nokia, the Windows Phone platform is a great dovetail mesh slogan wise. Nokia's slogan is Connecting People. The Windows Phone's slogan is Put People First. Coincidence?....

Hi there
C'mon guys: the Nokia stuff looks like an old Brick Phone

The latest Samsung Galaxies are really Thin -- have beautiful screens and it's the first time even people like me can actually use the wretched thing -- I could never do the "thumbs" texting and was totally hopeless with the firtst generation of "Smart phones" -- I needed an Idiot proof one-- Apple would have probably been OK as their stuff works straight out of the box but expense and dislike of apple generally swayed me to look for something else..

Might be the Galaxy III S isn't yet available in the US but in it's white / Black / Blue options beats Iphone hands down and is a really terrific looking phone too. It's really THIN as well -- that's great for carrying it and battery life is fine even with a music app on all day plus wi-fi.and Android 4.03 (ICS) Does actually seem really more useable than Android 2.3.

The new thin HTC phones are also great looking too.

Nokia is DEAD and BURIED over here -- even the normally conservative and staid "Financial Times" is suggessting that Nokia might not make it and its best survival course is for a takeover.

The only hope for Nokia to shift volumes of these phones is in some 3rd world countries -- but shifting handsets is one thing -- making MONEY is another.

If I were to start using a Nokia phone with that HIDEOUS Nokia ring tone in a bar here in central Brussels the looks I'd get would be unbelievable -- people would view me as a throw back to the Dinosaur age -- and while I normally don't give a toss about that sort of stuff in this case I'd actually agree with them.

Go and have a look at the latest HTC's and SAMSUNG's --might not be available in US yet though.

Now "Hacks"for using Wind 8 on a Samsung might be interesting -- as I said the problem isn't with Win 8 but the not very interesting platform Ms has deceided to try and get its mobile OS on. Can't see a huge revenue stream emerging from that source.

Cheers
jimbo

Cheers

Thinness on a phone is something I don't really mind so much, after a while, I just want to be able to put it to my ear to use it as a phone.

I don't get why Nokia, the third largest phone maker, is declared almost dead in the water. They've had their rough years with Symbian and not breaking into the market that well, but things might be turning over for them since they adopted Windows Phone as their main platform, not only are they supporting Windows Phone 7, but they're developing for Windows Phone 8. I think they're a good company that knows how to build quality phones and has phones with surprisingly awesome cameras on them. Even the HTC Titan II with its 16 MP camera is beat out by the Lumia 900's Carl Zeiss lens!

Nokia is focusing on the emerging markets and the lower end scale of smartphones that android dominates in. Microsoft wants to tap the emerging markets that as of now, can't afford iphones but can afford a dreaded android. The Lumia 610 is running on a slender built Windows Phone 7, code named Tango, and actually runs surprisingly well compared to a higher end Windows Phone. It's designed to target the vast demographic that uses a crapdroid and despises it, I've personally seen that hate physically and verbally expressed. The problem is, even new phones built today and a few years ago STILL use android 2.3.2.4.2.4.23.23 or maybe from time to time android 3. Only a few new ones have android 4. I've tried them all and the experience ends in frustration and disgust.

Nostalgia is for some who might like that, I personally don't use Nokia's ringtone, I use the Lumia 800's ring tone. I think you need to use a Nokia Lumia 900 with Windows Phone, a totally different beast than I think you might be talking about.

That is a cool ringtone! Beautifully different, as is the Windows Phone!

I've checked some HTCs and Samsung phones running android, bleh. Where's the phone part? If I wanted something with a quad core processor, a gig or RAM and 32 gigs of storage, I'll get me a WinRT tablet. Seriously, I think it's straight up ABSURD how phones, especially android phones, have gotten to. It's like some uber competitive, high end Intel desktop builder decided to make a small touch screen puter that has a phone built in. They're not phones anymore, they're computing devices that DO NOT do what an ACTUAL smartphone should do these days; connecting you to the people you care about most and making the complex process of human communication easier and better. As for as I know, android and ios fall flat. Every new android phone is about one thing: more processing ability. It's ridiculous, it's like the race between AMD and Intel on who can make a faster device. Why? Is the OS that crappy it needs more power to provide the user experience? I mean really?! Some of these phones have motion backgrounds, Windows vista once had that back in the day when processing power was the name of the game because vista needed better hardware to provide a solid user experience. Phones aren't PCs, the form factor isn't designed for that, but yet android wants to change that.

Microsoft choosing Nokia for Windows Phone will probably turn out well for the both of them. The others are too focused on putting quad core processors and 20 gigs of RAM and 5 inch 1080p screens and 500 gigs of storage and the capacity on using a little phone as a PC. Nokia's Symbian OS isn't that great and could work if they tried really hard, but they don't have something different from the rest. They don't have a product so truly different. Microsoft needs a company that can built top notch phones and can market them.

I don't know, Microsoft, as of recent, has been picking up some weaker tech companies that were once huge and together, they can make a comeback. Maybe I just like an underdog story....

i just get annoyed that with my Droid, if I take it off my charging dock at home, have it on me all day at work and get home and try to go for a run, it seems like I don't have enough juice to use my Amazon MP3 cloud player and RunKeeper with GPS tracking on the phone without having to charge it for awhile.

A few things you can do to extend the battery life.

1) Turn off the GPS and Bluetooth when you're not using it.
2) Use wireless internet rather than 3/4G when at all possible, it uses much less power.
3) Disable services that are constantly pinging a server on the network (the default SMS app that comes with Android is actually a pretty bad culprit.. if you install a 3rd party SMS it helps. You have to disable the factory one though).

There are a few others as well, but doing these doubled my battery life.
