    Recover from USB assistance

    Hey all -

I have a win8 tablet that I backed up or created a restore USB I do not recall which one I did a few years ago - either way I have a tablet that will not boot up and need to just start over from the USB drive.

I changed the start up to boot from the USB first but when I boot up I get stuck at the screen in the attachment and not sure how to proceed any help would be great.

Are you sure you are booting from the USB drive? Your tablet should have key to press to enter the BIOS. It's usually the Delete key for a PC. Enter the BIOS and go to the Boot Override section to select the USB drive as the boot device . You may also have a key you can press which goes straight to the Boot Override screen (it's F12 on my Dell laptop) and then try the repair option. You could also try system restore.

Your USB drive may not be bootable. If this is the case, create a bootable USB drive using Microsoft's Media Creation Tool. Be careful to select the right version of Windows for the one you have installed. Then try a repair from this new bootable USB drive.

Thank you Steve for the suggestion. I am sure I am booting from the USB (see photo of bios) and when I don't have the USB attached I am taken to a "there are no more bitlocker recovery options on your pc" screen and can't do anything there.

I was not 100% sure if I was using a bootable USB so I did make one but not using the method you suggested becasue - well - that was a bit confusing as I am on a Win7PC but the tablet is Win8 and I can't seem to get the media creation tool to install using the Win7 PC if that makes sense.

I was not sure if I should be using FAT or NTS so I used NTSF

I do have another Win8 Tablet - the same make/model - is there something I can do with that to help resotre the broken tablet?

Maybe your USB stick isn't bootable? Have you tried making a bootable USB drive from here Creating installation media for Windows 8.1 - Windows Help ?

Try compatibility mode for Windows 7 if that's what you are using and try running the media creation tool as Administrator. Else, you can create the bootable USB drive from your W8 tablet.

You should finish up with a USB stick to boot from then attempt to repair the W8 tablet. Remember to create OS media which matches the OS on the tablet you are repairing.

Great suggestion and I tried it out. I am not 100% sure the SanDick Cruiser will work I see some comments online it may not work for this so will buy a different one today and try it again.

Right now when I use the SanDisc Cruiser after using the media creation tool it throws me into the bitclocker.

I just use the basic Kingston Traveller USBs without any problem. Is the USB drive formatted - mine are FAT32.

Well turns out the "Cruizer" might have been the issue. I purchased a generic USB drive and followed the very same steps and wouldn't you know it it worked! That is the good news and a fresh version of Win 8 has been installed and I am able to use it with a mouse and keyboard attached.

The bad news is a lot of things do not function - touch (it is a tablet), audio, wireless, bluetooth - I have not figured out everything but a lot of things do not work. Even after downloading some drivers from Dell a lot of things still do not function.

Now that I have it at least functioning does anyone think I can use the other identical tablet to back up the driverset and install on this tablet to get the basics working? or do a recovery disk on that tablet and restore it on this tablet etc.???

    Not a brick anymore but w/o touch/wireless/bluetooth etc...kind of close to a brick : )

First try sfc /scannow from an elevated command prompt.

It's likely more drastic action may be needed. Try an in place repair install which will keep your programs and data - see the tutorial on this Forum.

If that doesn't work you may to refresh the tablet or do a clean install.
