Solved sfc cannot repair & trackpad freezes - brand new ThinkPad

Hi Everyone,

I've bought a new Lenovo ThinkPad T440s laptop, which I am generally very happy with, except for two issues.
1. As I was upgrading from Win8 to Win8.1 and installing software, out of curiosity I ran sfc /scannow and it can back as corrupt and not able to repair (I then repeated three times with restarts, still no joy). I sent it back to be looked at, Lenovo returned it stating that it now passed all tests. However, when I run sfc / scannow, it still brings up the same result.

Having said that, it appears to run just fine, except for:
2. When it comes out of stand-by, the track-pad pointer freezes. I then have to use the Tab key to navigate to the Reboot thingy on the Start page. I have discovered that if I use the power button to put the laptop into sleep mode again and leave it for 10 minutes, when it comes out again, I can then use the trackpad as normal. (Hibernate is disabled, I put it to sleep and re-awaken by pressing the Power button)

Before I return it to Lenovo I would like to better understand what is going on here. The second point is probably a driver issue, the first point is more concerning.

Many thanks for any and all pointers, Chig.

Please perform another sfc/scannow command in admin command prompt, reboot and try it again.
After you have rebooted and tried it again, please upload the cbs.log file found in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS (where C is the letter of the windows partition, if you use another letter please use that letter)

If the cbs.log file is too large, please use a 3rd party uploader.

That command is not for fixing faulty driver issues. After updating to 8.1. Microsoft Update should install the latest touchpad driver. If not, it should be available on Lenovo's support site for that model.

As for the freezing after waking up from sleep mode. It is common for a device to not be awaje until the OS is done doing its checks and IRQ requests to hardware.

Hi again and thank you for your replies.

I was definitely using the elevated command prompt to run sfc /scannow. Have rerun it again following your instructions axe0, and have attatched both a screen-grab of the sfc result, plus the cbs.log file.

Broe23, after installing win8.1 I went to the Lenovo ThinkPad support site and downloaded/updated everything there which seemed appropriate. When I wake up the laptop after it has been asleep, the mouse pointer (sometimes, not every time) does not move. In the Mouse Properties dialogue box, under Pointer Options, I have 'Show location of pointer when I press the CTRL key' ticked, so I can find it, but it doesn't move. I have the latest Lenovo mouse driver.

Looking back over my original entry, I see I could have written it clearer. When I wrote "However, when I run sfc / scannow, it still brings up the same result" I meant that after returning it to Lenovo, when I received it back a week later, I then ran sfc /scannow again and it 'showed the same result', i.e. it was still finding corrupted system files and still unable to repair them.

Hope that has cleared up my inaccuracies, thank you, Chig.

There seems to be a single problem with sfc/scannow, I have removed the false positives.

Hi All,

So far, so good. I went to http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/26512-dism-fixing-component-store-corruption-windows-8-a.html and ran the > /Restorehealth command, attached is the successful cleanup notification, and the ooops, just seen that KYHI asked me to run the /ScanHealth command. Duh, I jumped the gun. Anyway, the dism.log log is also attached.

I've also downloaded the Windows8.1-KB3013769-x64.msu to my desktop but I haven't installed it yet, I also haven't rebooted yet.

Thanks guys.

BTW I do not have a touch-screen with this laptop, so have no use for any touch-screen related services etc running in the background. I will at some point have a Wacom tablet. TY.

When I started this thread I considered whether to make two separate posts, or just the one. I decided to make just the one, but now it is getting a little complicated.

axe0, Sorry yes, I see I've used the terms Mouse and Trackpad interchangeably. You are right, I have a track-pad on my ThinkPad, I do not have an additional mouse. Thank you for pointing that out. When I referred to mouse pointer, I meant the pointer on the screen, my bad.

I'll wait to get a reply as to rebooting, installing and corrupt win8 files, before I do anything else.

Apologies for my confusion.

the corruption is > Microsoft-Windows-TabletPC-InputPanel

That is a Tablet Input Panel = touchpad = mouse = whatever you want to call it..

That KB is the one that contains the files that are corrupted = install the KB may solve your problem, as /restoreheatlh is referring to that KB

If the issue continues with the mousepad/touchpad/input device - then you can un-install that KB and thus remove any prior instances of it > which may also resolve your issue(s)

SFC is known to flag perfectly good files as corrupt - thus SFC is not the Best option to run...
And the known source for some of the reported file corruption.. Although these are false positives on .json files

KB3013769 was already installed. I uninstalled, rebooted, installed the newly downloaded file.

This DISM was unknown to me. KYHI, I just discovered your http://www.eightforums.com/performa...-dism-restorehealth-repair-corrupt-files.html and am working my way through it now.

Thanks everyone. Actually it never occurred to me that the two issues might be related. If I understand correctly, the results of the two log files I uploaded indicate they are.

I'm gonna play around with the info in KYHI's above mentioned thread. I understand that although SFC sometimes indicates corrupt files, they can be false-positives. Bit of a bummer really but I guess that's how life is.

Cheers, Chig.

Edit: sfc is still indicating corrupt files. DISM indicates no component store corruption.

No it isn't, it was specific for this "However, when I run sfc / scannow, it still brings up the same result. "

That does nothing for the OP. Waking up a computer out of sleep mode is like waking up a person. It takes a bit for everything to wake up.

They are seeing what is normal. It can take longer, depending on what software was left running when it went to sleep.

@chigwells, that is because of the false positive that is coming from an windows update for windows 10, no need to worry about it.
But if you want to be sure, search in the cbs.log for 'cannot repair'.
The false positive files I left away, most likely you'll find them if you search:

Hello again guys, thanks everyone for your inputs!

Well last night I went back to Lenovo support and did my best to make sure I have newest drivers all-round. I uninstalled that KB3013769 thingy, rebooted and re-installed.

After all these updates and reinstall, I get exactly the same results with sfc and dism, duh. sfc still reports corrupt files. The dism /restorehealth again comes up as 'clean'.

I have also left the laptop in sleep mode for a couple of longer sessions and a few shorter sessions, overnight. Happily, each and every time when I woke up the laptop, the track-pad/mouse pointer worked fine and did not freeze.

Conclusion: I was concerned that my brand new laptop was somehow broken or corrupted, as it was continually indicating the corrupt system files under sfc. I think now, after KYHI's pointer that this can be a false positive, just to relax and let it be.

I'd like to thank axe0, broe23, and KYHI for all your helpful advice. Virtual beers all round!

Moral of the story: If M$ wouldn't keep chopping and changing their OS, we'd all be more experienced with the OS. I was just starting to get an understanding of Win7, and my laptop dies, and guess what, new lappie comes with new OS.

I'm gonna close this up now as resolved, TYVM.

No problem. It is always best to take all input and make sure that you have covered the basis. You never know how easy or hard these issues can be. Make a drive image backup, so that if it happens again, you can have it handy if all things tried fail.
