I can't help you choose a laptop.
From the number of posts here from people with laptops that have major problems with them, I personally would not buy one.

But if you do get one, I suggest you make the suggested recovery media offered by new computers.
& get factory recovery disks if they are offered by the company.
I also suggest you get Macrium Reflect Free & make a system image while your new computer is in good running order.

Windows restore points often go belly up.

Having good backup that you can depend on is good. :)

do you recommend geek squad protection with laptop? It is available for 99$ for two years, is it worth it?

I know nothing about it so can't suggest it.
What I suggested is free except for the factory recovery disks.

I'd never buy something like Geek Squad protection, or let them even touch a computer of mine. I've heard many horror stories about their service. They don't do anything you couldn't do yourself for free with maybe a little help from good forums such as this one. As for which laptops to consider, I don't think you can go wrong with a Dell. I got eight years out my my first one.
