Hi

I added two new drives and its says im using 8.15TB of 19TB pool capacity but for some reason I cannot change the storage pool maximum to be greater than 15.8TB once I go above 15.8TB it shows a message "The specified size is not valid"

Thats because you only can choose a maximum pool capacity of 10.9 TB.

But 10.9 is the available space not what the total pool size can be which should be 19TB. Just tried again it gives the message "A storage space can be larger than the amount of available capacity in the storage pool" but it just wont let me make it more than 15.8TB

Note following:
1gb = 1000mb in hdd sales advertisements, 1gb in os = 1024mb
Edit = 1000000 gb = 976.5625gb,os

Im in change a storage space unless there is another way, I have already added the drives but the pool capacity didnt change so I have gone here to create the max pool size to match the max size available

There is a difference in how Hard Disk Capacities are stated by manufacturers compared to how operating systems calculate them.

To Hard disk manufacturers a kilobyte is 1000 byes, a megabyte is 1000 kilobytes , a gigabyte is 1000 megabytes and a terabyte is 1000 gigabytes = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. However to most operating systems a kilobye is 1024* bytes, a megabyte is 1024 kilobytes (=1,048,576 bytes) and a gigabyte is 1024 megabytes (1,073,741,824 bytes), etc.

So when a hard disk manufacturer says a hard disk has a capacity of 1 Terabye it means the capacity is 1,000,000,000,000 bytes +/- a few percent. For demonstration purposes let's assume that they mean exactly 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. When the operating system calculates that capacity in Gigabytes it divides the 1,000,000,000,000 bytes by 1,073,741,824 bytes/gigabyte which equals 931.3 gigabytes.

So the reported 930 GB is about right. There is no space missing.

This difference in how hard disk capacities are stated has existed since the days when a large hard disk was only 5 MB.

* 1024 = 2^10 and is the power of 2 that is closest to 1000.

Source: why hard drive of 1TB shows 930GB

Yes I understand.

But then if I have 2 x 3.63TB + 1 x 930GB + 2 x 5.45TB = 19TB. So why won't storage spaces allow me to create a pool this large? Especially when the maximum that can be created is actually 63TB as noted below.
