Updating my printer, Hewlett Packard kindly plonked a "HP Support Assistant" icon in my notifications area, to the left
of my "Hidden Icons" up arrow. This is not shown my Control Panel for Notifications. It will not move if I try and drag it - it simply starts to open!
How do I get rid of that unwelcome visitor? (preferably not by messing in my registry?)

What happens when you right-click it?

Are you right-clicking on the actual icon or just the Taskbar?
The icon should give a different menu, even if it's just "Open".

Unfortunately I can't paste a snip here or in 'advanced' Reply. It's a blue (?) Open HP or not the icon or the bar itself gives same menu when I RCl. it.

Personally I would just uninstall it. Unless you actually need it. I don't use any of HP's software except drivers.
Especially for my scanner. There's much better out there.
Open the app and look in settings. There might be a checkbox for "Tray icon" or somesuch.

There's much better out there. Now that's really interesting - WHAT?
HP somehow did on this occasion, and others, solve horrible problems, very nice.
I think I will take your hint, and delete, as well as other b******t they spy on you with, like Customer Satisfaction bandwidth thieves, especially "Automatic Updates" for them and anyone else I can find with my Network Monitor.
I will look in the Programmes/HP folders - it's not an 'app/extension/plug-in/add-on'

Well, for scanning there's Vuescan: VueScan Scanner Software for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux
Been using it for years.
For printing it's a combination of the drivers and whatever software you're using. Don't delete any drivers, you need them.
As far as utilities to tell you if your ink is low, I've found the actual printer does a pretty good job of that itself.
Most of HP's software is bloatware (personal opinion). It's not bad, just mostly unneeded.

Thanks Cradom,
I totally agree with you HP's software is bloatware.
After my update I'm going to start a heavy pruning today. Starting with that irritating icon.
