Paste function greyed out on thumb drive

I,m trying to copy/paste from a word doc to a thumb drive but paste feature on thumb drive is not operational. I can do this on my wifes computer running xp but will not work on my laptop running windows 8. Tried dragging and drop but no go. Pls help, thanks.
