How To Stop Windows 10 Download?

I reserved the Windows 10 upgrade on my 8.1 laptop. At least I thought I reserved it only.
I was reading a web page and noticed my DSL data light blinking like crazy.
I finally went to "windows update" and it showed Windows 10 was downloading (12% complete).
    I cancelled it.
I changed the update settings to manual.
Now when I check for updates, Windows 10 starts downloading again, so I cancel it again or it indicates Windows 10 failed.
No other updates appear, just Windows 10.
Apparently I clicked the wrong thing and now I can't get out of this loop.
My question is, how do I get back to where when I check for updates manually the important and recommended updates appear and the Windows 10 update does not appear?
Thank you for helping me get out of this mess.

I guess its too late now but you should have just let it download you don't have to install it until your ready. You'll need to find the download partial file download and delete it. that should let is continue the download. Hopefully you don't have your computer set to auto install updates?
Another thing you could do is restore back to yesterday before you started the download either with an image that you have or Control Panel/Recovery/Open System Restore and restore back to yesterday or any time before you started the download. I don't use Restore so I'm not completely sure but It think that will get you there.

You cannot. It will be a forced upgrade by the 29th of July next year.

Apparently it's too late to correct my mistake.
I now manually check for updates (not automatic).
    Click on other available updates.
    Check the important updates.
    Un-check Windows 10 Home.
    Click on install
Looks like I'm stuck with this until July 29, 2016?

Links or its not true. You can opt out, its not a forced upgrade. Uninstall the GWX app and no upgrade unless you want to.
