SSD for JUST the OS or for Programs as Well?

Going to be picking up a new SSD today. The question I have is will I get better performance from the SSD by installing ONLY the OS (W8.1 64 bit) oppose to installing the OS as well as programs/drivers?
Will the SSD operation faster with just the OS installed in it alone?
Maybe I should install my programs on just a HDD and save the SSD for the the OS alone?
Opinions please.
Thanks in advance.

In general SSD as you know system will perform better with SSD, most will use SSD for OS. This matters to size you are thinking of buying for OS.
Larger size SSD's have better performance, read and write usually compared to the smaller ones. Now also matters how much software you have to put on, then size you can use to worry about leaving space as not same like it is with a HDD, i do not think loose performance as much if fill it 50-75%. Software to will perform of course better on SSD then HDD. HDD be good for Music, Videos and Movies and backup too, do not require speed to run well. Still use HDD to install software too. I have 2 SSD's, use one for OS, one for games and HDD for Music,Videos, files, documents,etc.. and other backup.

Hello BeK,

If you have the free space available, it would be best to install everything on the SSD for better performance, and use the HDD for backups and/or data.

Hope this helps some. :)

I would not go with PNY. Look more at Samsung, Crucial these days prices are getting cheaper.

Woah! Thanks for the insight. I would have picked it up without hesitation. I guess you get what you pay for huh?

So are Sammy and Crucial the only manufacturers you stand by?
What about Sandisk or Intel SSD's?

Your welcome, this place is good, free fast shipping, plus not sure of your price range. Newegg is reliable so is this place, but in N.Y. and reliable too. Intel you have now is one of best brands to very expensive, i see from your specs, assume want a bigger SSD.

Intel is also a fair choice in SSD.

A crucial mx100 or mx200 will run the same amount of money, but be much better than that PNY.

A Samsung 850 EVO/Pro at the same price is not a bad drive either.
(I use an 850 EVO, the write speed is a cache so long writes (3GB+) are more in the range of 150MB/s to 300MB/s.)

Corsair Force and Neutron series are fair.

Just don't buy PNY, they're awful.

Your welcome, this place is good, free fast shipping, plus not sure of your price range. Newegg is reliable so is this place, but in N.Y. and reliable too.
Samsung 500GB 850 Evo 2.5" SATA III Solid MZ-75E500B/AM B&H

Not a bad price. I guess I'll just get a huge SSD and place the OS as well as programs on it.
Thanks for the input guys!

YW, i see have many drives begin with still, can buy smaller for 0S, again mattering to how much have put on, but i have a 250GB Samsung for OS and software, still enough space. You have Intel SSD can use still as a D: drive for some stuff.

Yes I do like my Intel SSD but it's only 120GB capacity and I have only about 2GB left of space. That's with OS AND programs installed in it. I need at least a 240GB SSD to make the upgrade worthwhile.
Going for a 500GB would be future proofing for years to come [emoji4]

I had issue with a crucial, although i think they are best bang for a buck and still have one on system, Samsung and Intel tend to be expensive, intel more so.

As said still use intel on system, put some stuff on it, worth still using it i felt, since good SSD. Remember as you might know, 500GB not what going to show when you install it, least 30 or more GB less. My 512GB shows 476GB.

Well the plan was to buy a 240GB SSD for OS/programs and use my current 120GB Intel SSD for games. I plan on ditching the 64GB Crucial since its old and slower not to mention the fact that it can only house a handful of games.

Problems with 120GB for games is, game tends to be large in number of GB
