Did you read the information that is posted over in tenforums? It is the same as when you upgraded from 8 to 8.1.

You always make a backup of your computer, before you do any upgrading. Basically this point onwards, is supposed to be like those using Mac OS-X. The install behaves like a Service Pack. But that does not always mean that something could not go wrong.

The short answer is no, your drive will not be formatted. All of your programs and data will be preserved and just the OS will be upgraded in-place.

A lot of them have already been answered over at tenforums.com Once you upgrade to 10, you have the option for a Clean install. Or you can just let it carry over items from 8.1.

Personally I do not feel sorry for those who do the upgrade, but do not do a back up of their 8.1 install, or pulled license info from purchased programs, using either Speccy or Belarc Advisor.

Most people do not know they should do a backup before doing the upgrade. They are users, not tech nerds like most of us who spend time on the forums.

The install should tell them to do a backup and explain what that entails. Most would still ignore it but at least some people would make the right choice and backup first.

These forums are going to go nuts on the 30th or whenever the upgrade starts hitting these people. The phone lines to Microsoft will be melting down

Saw answer here myself, assume steps are same as mentioned in Ten Forums for technical, insider preview for clean install.
I always back up, plus have Windows 8.1 disc.

I always do a Clean install with any OS. I will run a Belarc or Speccy to have available what is installed on a computer when I do anything like that. That way I know which items were downloaded and if they have a paid license.

Problem so far is how is this clean install exactly going to be done, will we be able to get or make an ISO as done with Insider or technical previews, only assume be same, no words yet i see on exactly how. All i know is what is said, have to upgrade first then you can. I to rather always do clean install myself if possible. Then i think might only be period of time can do clean install or how many times can be done. I am grateful it is free for qualifying versions.
