Hi, i have a win 8.1 based desktop. Just freshly installed the OS today. Got a weird issue- restarting the machine is taking more than 2-3 mins. Any ideas please?

The screen just reads 'Restarting' and the wheel keeps on rotating and stays for about 2-3 mins before finally rebooting. No, i haven't used windows updates today after installing the OS.

Since was freshly installed i thought there is a good chance may have been installing updates. Now may have it set to automatically install updates so not aware it may have been doing this. Check in control panel under windows updates, select view update history and see dates of updates, just want to make sure of this as there are many new windows updates since now you just did a fresh install. I reinstalled not long ago, was over a hundred updates had to put back in myself.

Hmm..not many. Sometimes when restart may not notice says restart and update why thought could be that. Basically this started happening right after install of Windows 8, which made me feel still either setting up stuff or updating as are many more updates you need still.

Still the same now ? Have not decided to go with Windows 8.1 update ? Have installed other software ? Updated system drivers ? This a custom build or retail brand ? What is model and make ?

Do you know how to restart in safe mode ? Like to see if this happens in safe mode. Chances something that is loading or trying to load is causing this, drivers or a service.

  • Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, tap Settings, and then tap Change PC settings.
(If you're using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, click Settings, and then click Change PC settings.)
  • Under PC settings, tap or click Update and recovery, and then tap or click Recovery.
  • Under Advanced startup, tap or click Restart now.
  • Once your PC restarts, on the Choose an option screen, tap or click Troubleshoot.
If you don't see the Startup Settings option, tap or click Advanced options.
  • Tap or click Startup Settings.
  • Tap or click Restart.
  • On the Startup Settings screen, select safe mode, should be number 4.

  • Sign in to your PC with a user account that has administrator rights.

Let me know if it starts slow. What about cold boot, first starting the PC, how is it then ?

Open Event Viewer by right clicking the Start button, click Event Viewer.*
    18abb370-ac1e-4b6b-b663-e028a75bf05b_48.jpg
If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. Maximize the screen, on the left open Custom Views, then Administrator events, from the top of the list in the middle do you see any items marked Error in a red exclamation point or as you go down list.

Some people who have had this issue have disabled fast startup also a solution, but if due to something else, it is not.

The method of safe booting you detailed here somehow did not work at my end, nothing appeared on pointing my mouse to the lower right of the screen, strange because i know this is how it works, used a lot earlier before i installed this OS.
so, i followed the below method for safe boot-
Use the System Configuration Tool (msconfig.exe) - works in Windows 8 & 8.1. The easiest method for booting into Safe Mode is to use the System Configuration tool, also known as msconfig.exe. Go to the Boot tab and, in the Boot options section check the box that says "Safe boot". Then, click or tap OK.

Both Safe and cold booting took less than a minute.

Event viewer showed me 259 entries- about 150 of which are red exclamation errors and rest were yellow warnings.

I have previously tried the askvg method, did not work.

I think some issue with this custom OS itself. All i want is a slimmed down version of Win 8.1 as i use my machine mostly for gaming and watching HD movies. Thanks a lot for all your guidance so far mate.

yeah buddy.. unless you have an alienware computer .. do you?
There most definitely are settings that someone setup in the alienware 'version of windows 8... that could be conflicting with your system..

but before I go on, do you or do you not have an alienware system ?

You are welcome !!
So this Custom built did not come with Windows 8.1 or did it and then you reinstalled it recently and then this issue came up with slow restart ?
When showed me Windows update screen definitely not all recommended and important are all done yet, not saying this might be cause.

If setting someone setup in Custom built if reinstalled it should be gone, unless something else not been told about.
Now you said doing safe boot through PC Settings, Advanced options did not work, what happened exactly ?

Strange that cold boot would boot fine and restart take so long. Windows 8.1 fast startup not going have an effect on restarts as was shown as a possible resolution.

When use Event Viewer most recent ones errors in red if left click one and go to the right see an option to Copy, left click it one option will be Copy Details to Text, then open Notepad and paste a few post them here, do one at a time, just save Notepad open notepad and do another.
Just like to see what some of these errors are.

Can be caused by hardware issue or it's drivers as system check these on start, but would figure usually would do it when you cold boot.
Restarts are always bit slower then cold boot.

Have recent driver updates for AMD video card or any other slot cards ?
