Sounds like you hard drive might be failing or the connection is loose.

Might be failing.

A failing hard drive means that the laptops storage could be getting ready to break. With potential complete data loss of anything not backed up online or to another storage device.

I wouldn't assume that right away though. It's more likely to be the connection coming loose.

What kind of computer is it? Vendor, model, laptop/desktop/tablet, how old is it. etc.

Can you flip it over and fetch me the model number on the bottom.

It'll either be labels "Product Name" or "Model Name" near some bar codes.

5 year old laptop with probably a hard drive of the same age. Yep, failing hard drive. Replace it with an SSD, or just get a newer, faster one, than the one you have now.

Probably not -- just due to the HDD. But a drive that old in a laptop that gets used a lot (e.g., daily) is at or nearing the end of its useful life.

If the machine is shutting down due to overheating, presuming it has not done this all along, then it needs to be cleaned so that air can circulate through the cooling vents. You can due that using a can of compressed air that is used for cleaning components.

If that doesn't solve the overheating, you will then need to consider replacing the fan. I had to do that on an old laptop that started to overheat regularly. If you're not comfortable disassembling a laptop, then you would need to pay a computer repair place to do it.
