Open up Command Prompt as Administrator. (Start + X --> Press A)

Type: assoc .SRT=
That should change it back.

Alternatively, you could use REGEDIT.

Just go here, HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\CLASSES
And delete the folder named: .SRT

For the Video Player(s) to regconize that there's a subtitle associated with the Movie. The name of the subtitle must match the name of the Movie. For example:
the movie is MissionImpossible.mp4
then the srt filename must be MissionImpossible.srt

Some Video Player will automatically read the srt file and display the subtitle, others might need to turn on the option to display it.
srt file is just a text file, you can open it with any editor program: notepad, wordpad etc... and has nothing to with not being able to display from the movie unless you mess up the format within the file.

I don't think WMP has ability to use any subtitles, at least I never managed to do it. Using Daum player or VLC to watch movies that are not in Serbian, English or French.
There are many other players that have much better support for subtitles and everything else than WMP, From VLC and some other ones, you can even use internet to find subtitles in many languages.

If you install a codec pack such as K-lite which includes ffdshow then you can display subtitle with WMP. However, personally I don't like to install any codec pack in my PC.
