Windows 8.1 Suddenly booting to blank screen

Good day to one and all,

I have encountered a dilemma of sorts with windows 8.1 suddenly booting only to a blank screen.

Was testing some of the themes I had downloaded for windows 8.1 when I clicked on the theme "A different touch Alt" and all of a sudden windows went blank. I could feel the OS running though co when I pressed the power button, it turned off after the usual amount of time it normally takes to shutdown.

Ever since I try to start, it only shows up until the Windows logo (blue squares) with the spiraling dots and then just blanks to a black screen that is illuminated.

Like before it appears that the OS is running in the background cos th HDD activity light keeps flickering. When the mouse is moved it shows the white default cursor moving around with the blue "processing" ring coming on and off and then disappears. Comes back on when the mouse is moved.

Tried booting in safe mode but no difference it shows the windows logo and then blanks out.

Also tried restoring, but it goes through the whole restoring process (initializing, processing, finishing), and thn says that it was unable to restore and that no files have been modified on the PC due to an unspecified error (0x8 1000204). However that's when I noticed that the restore had failed scanning the file system on drive E:\ ! Windows was definitely on Drive C: . I rebooted to command prompt and was surprised that the drive letters seemed to have changed. My windows drive was now showing on E drive along with all the other usual folders (ie program files, user, etc etc) and C: drive just seems to be empty with one file named "recovery.txt" which is also blank. My music and movies drive which was D: drive is now showing as G: drive.

I know the outcome looks bleak but any suggestions or tips will be greatly appreciated.

A little more background info,
Automatic updates are always set to manual so no updates were installed without my knowledge. Video drivers up to date installed months ago. I did have a few bad sectors on the HDD though. 500gb HDD partitioned in to 3, including windows reserved partition.

Please share your thoughts and tips. I'm really need to get at my office files.

Ps. I don't have another pc, at the mercy of my iPhone right now. :)
