change name of usb drive after formatting

hello i noticed today when formatting an external usb stick with right clik in win 8.1 change the name of usb.i have a sony micro usb stick(that was the name appeared when open ''my pc '' windows;SONY MICRO (F)).but after formatting simply appears the letter F.is that normal?

you can right click the drive and rename
or type in a name while formating
